My long-range chambering choice: Redux / Revamped / Revisited

There's an article out there called "Jason slaps steel with a 6.5x47 at ASC".

I think I found the link through 6mmBR, but don't have it at my fingertips. There's a video of the Jason Baney hitting steel at the Alleghenny Sniper Challenge, reputedly the premiere long range not-on-a-square-range UKD matches in America. Lots of steep shots, lots of wind, terrain wide-open and also thickly forested.

Anyhow, the calibers that prevail fall in the 6.5 to 7mm range, with a steady drift toward the 6.5s. The .30 cals don't fare so well because of the wind. Shots are all field positions, out to 1,100yds.

Zak, have you competed on Joe Harper's farm?

I haven't been to ASC because it's quite a haul from Colorado (about 25 hours). I'd love to get out there and shoot at some point. From what I understand, the match format is similar in some respects, and different in some respects, from the types of practical long-range field matches we have out here in the west.

You can read about some of the matches I'm involved with here:

I've already been all over your site Zak, it's one of the best sources out there that's for sure. Well written too. Thanks for giving us access to all the technical stuff on reticles, ballistics, wind, preparation...

Playing the long range games at that level is just not in the cards for me, not yet anyhow. I've got just over 300 yds to play with, with lesser rifles, which is still plenty fun for me.

I camped on the mountain, "Porte Crayon", which overlooks the Harper farm. You've seen the pictures, you know how steep and wild the place looks...well, it's even steeper and wilder. At the time, ASC was probably a dream in Markwell's mind and I had no idea he did anything but sell climbing gear down in Mouth of Seneca (now Seneca Rocks, on US 33). So close yet so far.
