While "Project Mannlicher" is slowed while getting checkered I started gathering pieces for my next project, one to outdo all the others I've built.
This is what we have so far (just a pile of pieces at the moment) Any ideas are welcome.
1909 Argentine large ring mauser action and old school dual trigger set up, new barrel in 6.5x55 as well.

Bolt and new handle, not going to jewel this one I think, just a high polish with the extractor nitre blued.

Side swing 2 position safety & Oberndorf style floorplate with release lever:

Nice figured stock, already got the shadow line chisled in , has a schnabel forearm:

Skeleton grip cap & safari style barrel sling swivel.

Still need to decide on iron sights, express multi leaf? and buttplate or recoil pad, again any thoughts or ideas are welcome.

Fantastic project, great makings.

I would propose old school rear aperture sight and hooded front.

What barrel length?

I was thinking some type of banded front sight , maybe a old school lyman type with a hood. I had thought of a flip up rear apeture inletted into the wood behind the tang.
Barrel is 21"
Talley or Warne QR rings engraved on the sides, otherwise iron sights are pointless.
If money were not an option an old school Paul Jaeger or Griffen & howe side mount.

Can I just send you my Mauser, when its done you can send it back. No questions asked, I'll just shoot my 1903 until finished.

Personally I would want to use a skeletonized butt plate to match the grip cap, a banded front sight and express multi-leaf rear sight. While an aperture sight might function great on this rifle, I think it would look "out of place" with the other components. Just my opinion yours may vary.

You're a lucky man headoftheholler, fine components and a vision. Can't wait until it's whole and the pictures are forthcoming.

I like the safety and the lever on the floorplate. I have a Paul Jaeger custom rifle so I understand your fine custom ideas, but I think the Paul Jaeger side mount is a bad idea. They may have been something good in the past but in my opinion they don't go with a high quality, sleek, short barrel, 6.5 X 55 rifle. I think a much better choice would be the Leupold QD bases and rings. They are steel, the scope comes off and mounts easy, and they return to zero.

More than likely will go with the Warne QD rings & get the sides engraved.

I thought about a skeleton buttplate, also throwing around a Neider checkered steel buttplate with hook on top.

This build and my Mannlicher stocked swede are hopefully going to be prime examples of what I am capable of doing for possible future custom rifle builds.

As for sights, if it were me, I'd scope it, but include a butt trap containing a peep sight that would mount on the rear scope base. I have a pre-64 Model 70 Winchester that actually has a Redfield peep mounted behind the rear scope base -- the disk has to come off to clear the scope.

If you do decide on that, you should offer everything from minor work to doing a complete build. I could see buying a cheap run of the mill Mauser and having you deck it out. The one I have now will stay the way it is. Fixing up a cheapo, adding a scope, nice stock, custom barrel.... That's where you'll make your money as you have the skills.

If you haven't already, you might think of attending a gunsmith course and getting an FFL. Oh yeah, post some more pics and when you finish, pics of the complete rifle.

definitely butplate, 6,5x55 is soft shooting in a heavy rifle. (I shoot my 1909 Carl Gustav on a regular basis)
looks much nicer then a recoil pad.
And more then likely, this is not the 100 rounds/day rifle

great work

On my most current build , a 94 carbine restocked with a custom full length stock I fitted a walnut buttplate to it since the recoil is negligible with the 6.5, I am leaning towards a Niedner at the moment , a skeleton would be nice but this blank has two major checks right on the butt that would show through on a skeleton.

I agree, I don't see full on $3-4K commisioned customs coming around all that often, the bread and butter work would put food on the table but to be honest what is holding me back is I think I am 30-40 years too late, there just isn't a market today for custom mausers vs custom AR's.
