I checked my M44 a while ago with a crude set up and it slugs 314 so it will definitely be getting some .303 bullets. but I wanted an easier way to make slugs than pounding a fishing weight of the wrong size down the bore.

I grabbed a 3/4 " steel plate and had someone at work cut it in half to make a two part mold then clamped the parts together and used a size O drill bit (.316) to make a hole most of the way through the plate. melted those fishing weights and poured them in. The slug I made measured exactly .316 and was much easier to drive down the barrel of the 91/30.

The slug measured .303/.312 on the grooves/lands, so my question to the high roaders is which bullet will work better in the 91/30? the 303 bullets I have yet to buy for the M44 or the 308 bullets I have for the M1?

Just drill approximate hole though the steel, (or even wood) plug off, pour, then drive slug out.

I have a piece of 3/4" thick aluminum plate that I use for such, last I looked, it had about ten different size holes had drilled in it.

much better way is take 00buck pellet and roll it on a steel plate with a file until you get it close to diameter needed. grooves at .312 and lands at .303 .311 bullets are fine i shoot them in all my mosins with grooves from .312to .314 and my enfield slugged out to .312 so .311s for for everything when you can find them. lets see if we can make the projectile manf. to increase there production of .311 bullets everybody keeps running out of stock.

Yep. Buckshot is MUCH easier to drive through bore than a slug. I use #0 or #00. I set it on the anvil of my vice, tap it a couple of times with a 2 lb. sledge to increase the diameter, oil it, and drive it through the bore.

If you're not going to use cast bullets, try the Hornady .312" 150 gr. Shot extremely well in all my Mosins and Enfields and it's quite a bit cheaper than other .31X" bullets.

My friend, thats some real long. complicated, multi-day easy !

0 buck....now thats easy.

Go with the .303

Invest in some cerrosafe and do it the easy way that any gunsmith would. It runs $14 a pound which last you a life time and you will be able to make chamber castings too.

slugging a mosin is nothing compared to a 5.45x39 barrel. it took a while to get the lead small enough to go down that barrel had to because it was key holing.
