My New 10mm Woods Gun

Welcome to the G20 club. My first G 20 (Gen 3) had a 6” Storm Lake barrel and it really moved a 180 gr XTP with 800X and a 200 gr XTP with AA9.

Sold it for some stupid reason a few years ago and recently added a G20 Gen 4 to my collection. Replaced the factory barrel with a standard length KKM barrel and it still runs the 180gr XTP 800X loads extremely well. Had to go up to a stiffer recoil spring with this one as well as the 800X load is heavy (over max) and throws brass a long way with the factory spring.

I’ve added the Springfield XDM Elite 3.8 10MM to my collection as well for urban carry.

I'm not saying it is the best choice for everyone, but I sold my G20 after buying a G29. I'd had the G20 for years and liked it a lot. I got a chance to buy a G29 at a good price and had both for a while. I just found myself reaching for the smaller gun more often. I shot them both equally well and I can use 15 round mags in the G29. Being able to mount a light while camping is important to me.

The 10mm is a niche gun for me. I like it, but don't shoot it enough to justify handloading for it. I'm well stocked on factory ammo. The last I bought was priced the same as 45 ACP and a friend gave me several hundred rounds of 40 S&W. It shot just fine in both guns with no modifications.

I bought a couple of boxes of DoubleTap 200 gr hardcast for it several years ago. It chronographed 1315 fps from my G20. I haven't tried the G29, but DoubleTap claims 1250 from the shorter barrel and 1300 from the G20. My G20 was right on the money so I'd expect the G29 should be too.

If concealment is important, I carry it with the 10 round mags. Otherwise, the 15 round mags with a grip sleeve.

Interesting, I also had both a G20 and G29 and sold the G29, as I found the G20 easier to shoot, and I was never planning on carrying the G29 as a concealed weapon. They are all good.

Congratulations on a fine purchase. For me if there is a downfall of the 10mm it is the way it ejects brass...... all the waaaaay to the next county. You will definitely get your 10,000 steps picking up your brass trying to find it. So whenever you get a chance buy brass.

Honestly, it doesn't seem like the brass goes quite as far as some of my .357 Sig pistols. But I get what you're saying, and I do need to buy more brass.:D

You are lucky then. My 10mm a Springfield with long slide, depending which distance you shoot will eject my brass to the top of the roof at the pistol range shooting 25 yards and at closer ranges to the target where the roof is not close, the brass lands about 3 lanes over.

Nice set-up! I went with the G29 with a 4.5" KKM barrel, X-Grip mag sleeve, Dawson FO sights, and used my old Bianchi military flap holster for woods carry.

I have noticed better accuracy with the factory barrel as I am pretty obsessed with carry pistol accuracy...

I'm currently evaluating my new Springfield Armory XD-M Elite OSP 3.8" 10mm as my new woods and CCW pistol.

I don't use a weapon light on my woods pistols because I don't venture out in the bush after dark, and I built a camp carbine that stays by my side while sitting around the campfire and sleeping in my tent. It has a light...

45/70??? or 30/30 or .44?

10mm is a fine woods gun. I live in the Southeastern US, and carry an SA Mil Spec in 45 acp, personally. But I’d say you did good OP!

let everyone have 9mm and Super Carry .30, real men carry at lease 10 in the woods!

Those are pretty good groups.

I have them both and also prefer the G20 though I won't be selling my G29. ever. 10mm is a good round, there's no doubt about it but these days, mine just don't get the love they deserve. I'm on a 9mm and 45 acp phase. again. I really really like 460 Rowland. It's just a beast of a handgun. It's like Thor's hammer in your hand. But even at close to a thousand ft lbs of muzzle energy, it's not unpleasant to shoot in a Glock 21. Quite the opposite in fact. It feels gooood.

The Razor Dobbs dude carries and uses a properly-loaded 10mm DW "Razorback" to take Big Game in the Africa boonies, where the ginormous mean critters hang out. Works fine too

Key over there, or up in Alaska, or out on the mean streets of urban 'Merica, is to load up with proper 10mm ammo. That's real 10mm ammo, not the diluted, overpriced, 40-level junk ammo. Leave that stuff to the Sunday afternoon range posers.

Or better still, stay outta the boonies and just carry a .40 and be done with it. The ammo's cheaper and you'll be packing a 9mm-size pistol, not a Big Boy pistol.

Plus, you won't embarrass the rest of us serious, hardcore 10mm fans. o_O

Win/win right there.
