Well, I couldn't wait any longer. I've wanted one since I was 10 years old when I saw Lethal Weapon. Plus, 15 years of handling my dad's model 96 and begging him to "let me inherit it a little early" with no luck, have made me anxious to have my own. (Dad says that's the very last gun he'll hold onto, well into old age, and I don't blame him). This last Saturday I bought a brand-new Italian-made Beretta 92FS, standard flat-black with white-dot sights. It was $499. I'm sure I could have found it cheaper online, but I wanted it to take with me over the weekend on a snowmobiling trip with a buddy.

Range Report:

I bought 2 boxes of $10 Winchester 115-grain FMJ and 1 box of $12 Remington UMC 115-grain FMJ and headed out. We stopped on state forest land during our trip to do some shooting. I loaded up 2 mags (30 rounds) and began shooting at a metal target at about 15 yards. First shot took me by surprise because of the complete lack of any harsh recoil. It was smooth as butter. A few more shots into the mag and I had a failure to feed. Then another a few shots after that. Wasn't this thing a Beretta? I blamed it on the cheap ammo. Then I handed it to my buddy and he put 1 mag through it with 2 more FTFs and got hit twice in the forehead with flying brass. Then, like the gun decided to finally wake up, there wasn't another single failure for the rest of the day. I took it back to the cabin that night, field stripped it and cleaned and lubed. Took it out the next morning and went through 50 rounds of the Remington UMC without a hiccup. I suppose most semi-autos have a few problems in the first 100 rounds, especially if you take it straight from the gun shop to the range without a quick lube job. With 150 rounds of crappy ammo through it, and now that it's been cleaned and lubed, I have very high hopes and expectations for this beauty. I love it.

Anyone want to start a Beretta 92/96 Club? If there is one already, I apologize, and please point me in the right direction. Thanks!:)

DING! DING! DING! We have a winner! ;)

Congrats on the 92. I've had one since 1999 or so, with no FTF's, FTE's, or any other problems of any kind, ever. No idea how many rounds I have through it. Get a "D" spring to improve the double-action trigger. Give the feed ramp a nice polishing, and enjoy!

Steps in new gun ownership

1. Ponder
2. Select
3. Find at right price
4. Take the plunge and buy
5. Strip, clean and lube!!!
6. Take shooting
7. Come to THR and give range report - with NO FTF news :D

If you took it right out of the box to the range without a field strip, who knows what was gumming around on the insides. Dust, piece of string, glob of lube, chunk of plastic, who knows. Could have been bone dry also. If it keeps up after a good clean and lube I'd be concerned.

Congrats on the new Beretta.

I picked up a LNIB 92FS yesterday. Mine is an early model with all metal parts, no warning label on the dust cover, and military post-dot sights.

It went straight from the car to the bench for a clean and lube. I plan to get some range time this weekend.

Yes, I know I should have stripped and cleaned it before the first shoot, but I literally went straight from the gun shop and hit the road to go snowmobiling in Central Oregon. But like I said, the second day of shooting, after a good clean, it worked flawlessly.

When holding this one up next to my dad's early 90's Italian 96, you can tell his is blued and mine is...well, not. "Bruniton" is what they call it, I believe. It's not as pretty as his 96, but it's still gorgeous. Can you buy a brand-new blued Italian-made 92FS? I hope not, because then I'd regret this purchase a little bit.

So I'm assuming there isn't a Beretta 92/96 Club on THR yet. I think there needs to be one. Any takers?:D
