I've just have to get one of these new Marlin 1895SBL carbines. .45-70, 6 round tube magazine, large loop lever for gloves, XS Ghost Ring peep site, in stainless steel with a nice recoil pad. I can't wait!;)

Looks pretty sweet to me! I actually like it a lot. I like the caliber, the stainless, the p-grip, the peep sight, and the rail. And the fact that there's no porting. The large loop is more gimmick than actual useful feature, but I like it too. Pretty much the perfect big bore levergun if you ask me, at least for harsh weather hunting.

Although lately I've been tending to prefer bottlenecked rounds for a longer point-n-click PBR.

Sorry about that Doc. But ya gotta admit, that's going to be one fun shooter and with all the bullet weights you can kill pretty much anything that walks the earth. Although a 510 gr. bullet out of a 7 1/2 lb gun is gonna make yer eyes water!

Cheers,

George of the Gungle

what is the recoil like in that (in ft./lbs)?, never been around a .45/70 but once. here in Texas, not much use for that, though I might get one for hogs in the brush here and we got thousands of them. I usally use a .45 colt or .44 mag, but might get a carbine that I can use in tight quarters.

If you've ever hunted with gloves on and tried to fit more than a couple fingers in a regular pistol grip lever then you know the large loop is more than just gimmick.
Despite this would add another caliber to my collection I sure do want one of these. Anyone actually seen one yet?

Very nice rifle that should serve you well. Depending on your loads you have everything covered in American game animals. Good luck with it.

Cheers Doc! Looks like a good choice. I've got one their Monarchs on my 220 Swift prairie dog rifle, great scope! They also have that power in a Monarch, guess I'll have to check them out.
There's a Cabela's 3 hours up the road (Hamburg, Pa.) that has a huge selection of scopes, they should have them. ROAD TRIP!!!!!!!!!

Cheers,

Because of the recoil of the rifle, I'd recommend a Burris scope with their reticle locking posi-lock system, but any of their scopes have double springs to hold the reticle. Heavy recoil can knock your zero off with some "standard" scopes. I also +1 to the 1-4x

Nope, sorry, I have, and guess what, you ain't gonna fire with a full-winter-gloved hand - you can't feel the trigger with enough precision to even know when the trigger is going to break. If you're gonna take your glove off, as you surely will when it's time to shoot, then you don't need the large loop. If you're wearing thin gloves, then you don't need the large loop either. It's a gimmick, as I said. But a nice fun theory. :p

GG, when you make it to Cabela's, I hope they have one of the Omegas I linked to, and I hope you pick one up and look through it. When you see the eye relief (12"-14" or more on 1.65 power), I think you'll want this scope for that rifle.

I agree, and may actually change mine out to the standard (when I get one...and I will). The only gloves I hunt or shoot with are unlined deer skin, due to the dexterity they offer. The loop is actually a little slower and to me looks a bit funny on the rifle. I am still deciding if my next rifle will be a SBL, a Winny 1895 in .30-06, or a CZ 550 Safari in .458WM (don't ask).

If I may be so bold...what was the asking price for the SBL (assuming that you inquired about the price when you saw it)? I have only been able to see/shoulder one (feels/points great) and it wasn't in the cheapest store in town. My favorite dealer (smaller place) can't find one right now. :)

Some body has to be negative. A blind animal would spot that flashy thing 5 miles away.
That brings about a good question about an idea that I was pondering today...I like the durability of SS for hunting but hate the looks of it...is it possible to blacken (by heat) an unfinished bbl (prior to boring/rifling) to obtain a less reflective but equally durable finish?

Well that is your opinion Tad, but I hunt with wool mittens with trigger finger and thumbs and the trigger finger portion has a hole in it so that I can feel the trigger after sliding my finger through the hole. Keeps my hands warm and with minimal movement I can make my finger easily available. The REST of my fingers are still enclosed in the mitten and are difficult to put in the pistol grip lever. If you think it is a gimmick fine, but in my experience and opinion it is not a gimmick at all.

I have an 1895G and it is an awsome carbine. I am shooting 405gr JSP over 50grs. of H322. Don't have a chrono but it should be pushing that 405gr bullet to at least 1700fps. Recoils is a littel stiff, kinda like a magnum 12g slug out of a pump. But it is nothing compared the nice report you get when touching one off.:D from me, :eek:from oterh guys at the range to :fire: from this one guy who said the report was affecting his shooting.

OK, fair enough. TexAg, you are exactly correct with that kind of mitten/glove setup; and I was thinking of that in the back of my mind, but so few people actually own/use those, I didn't think it worth mentioning - but this is why I originally said "largely" a gimmick. That specific setup is the exception to the rule, and you are exactly right! :)

Maverick, they are about $900.
That is about the same as the quote I got (actually $945 IIRC)...I think I'll shop around for a while. I have even thought of chopping a XLR down to SBL length. :)
