I was poking around a local sporting goods store and came across this little gem it the used shotgun rack. I am a sucker for a used 870, and with the English stock I couldn't pass it up.

The bluing is in pretty good shape and the stock is quite nice for it's age.

According to the Remington Society it's a Model 870 "Special Field" with a checkered, straight English-style stock and 21-inch ventilated rib barrel in full choke.

So far I'm loving it, it's quick, light and a joy to shoot.

It's a fixed choke, which as I understand the earlier ones came with. I'm not sure what year it was made so I'll have to give Remington a call and find out.

Nice grab

Hello friends and neighbors // Nice grab hlq

I got mine new in 1977 has proven itself time and again. 870 wingmaster 12ga. ,28" ,w/ 7 plus 1. MOD. fixed barrel 870 extended 1981 mod. fixed barrel.jpg

I would love to find one like yours with the shorter barrel.

Do they ever wear out? ;- )

Yup---should have bought the Special Field in the '90's when I was all fired up to get one---I balked at the $400 price tag----still kickin myself.

Nice gun there.

Thats a cool 870! I've never seen one like that. 870's are great, aren't they?

Here is my last used 870 I found:

NICE Special Field, hlq. Newer barrels for the SFs turn up occasionally that are fitted for choke tubes, and since they only fit other SFs, prices are usually pretty good. The barrel ring is set further back on those, as the magazine tube is shorter. SF barrels won't interchange with other 870s, just SFs.

positrack,
you have a reply in your 'Wanted' thread.

Tim,
VERY nice Cinderella there. Have you called Remington for a born-on date?

Thank you. I had been keeping my eyes open for a nice used Wingmaster for my dad for some time, and I came across this, and the price was great!. I'll be giving it to him soon. The fore end threw me off - I had never seen one like this on an 870, and I thought someone bubba'd it up until I saw an old ad from Remington that had one like this pictured. My only complaint about it is that it is a fixed full choke, but it patterns much looser than I thought it would. I think it will be a good trap and field gun. Oh, someone had also pained the bead day glow orange too, but I can live with that.

I did call them up, it's from 1955.

First 870 I've seen with an english style stock...hmm will have to read and find out if these will fit later express guns...if so, I since a new stock set may be in order. I love straight stocked guns.

You can always open up the choke on that barrel. I used a Chadwick and Trefethren adjustable reamer to open the full choke up on an 48 Sportsman in 16 gauge. Worked like a charm. The price is worth it to get the desired results. Went to about IC and stopped. I used the "C" size. You would need the "D" size reamer I believe. I got it from Midway.

Yeah, I know. I don't want to do anything to it. The gun will be going to my dad. If he wants to open, he can. I personally don't want to do anything to damage the value of the gun, so I personally would probably opt for a new barrel, even though that would double the cost of it.

That's a beauty Tim, that's reason enough for me to keep looking for another one!

Thanks for that info Lee I was thinking of picking up another barrel, either a later production with the Rem chokes or a fixed to have threaded.

FYI to all, yesterday two grouse fell prey to the "Special" :)

Absolutely love it. If I could have all the straight English stocked guns I have ever had back I would have quite a collection. I had an 1100, Browning Gold, and BPS. Numerous doubles. I dont like the pistol grip stock at all on field guns. Mine were all twenty gauges though too.

I have a brace of Special Fields, 12 ga and 20 ga. They came without tubed barrels, but I bought an extra barrel for each one that are tubed. Sweet!

First post here.
Bout 15 years ago I picked up a lightly used 20 LTW 870 Special Field, was my third 20 gauge 870, the first I got at 14 and has the full sized reciever, the 2nd years later is a youth Light Weight , I don't notice any more recoil but it sure carries easier. Then because the 20 Special Field looked so lonely I plunked down the cash for a almost new, 1100 Special Field in 12 gauge, it only comes out to play on nice days. Most often I grab my poor mans Special Field, a 870 with almost no blueing thanks to the previous owner, a salvaged 24" cylinder bore vent rib barrel with trittium front bead, a semi corncob forend and a cheap (birch?) buttstock that was also salvage that had the pistol grip removed, thanks to me. It carries easy and points fast, just what I need for critter control here on the farm.

Question was for hlq.

After looking on gunbroker I'm almost ashamed to say. They had two, one was priced at $299 and the one I bought which was $199. If I had known what people where asking for them I would have bought them both!
