My primer buying is on pause

Heading out on an out-of-state trip here soon.
Probably drop in to a couple of the brick and mortar stores along the way.
Not planning on finding anything, but if I find something I can use and I think is a fair deal, I'm in.

I disagree. A lot of this is very predictable and it follows a cycle. When ammo was still readily available, so were primers. As ammo availability started to dwindle, primers were still available even at normal prices. Then ammo mostly disappeared from the shelves, primers were not quite as abundant, but were available at normal prices and no limits on orders. After a few months of that, ammo was essentially unavailable in most stores (a few small orders would pop up for an hour at some stores but that was about it). About that time primers started to get harder to find and limits were starting to be placed on orders. The prices still remained unchanged. This continued for a few months and pretty much anyone that could backorder bulk primers was putting in as many orders as they could enter knowing they can sell them on the secondary market at vastly marked up prices. Eventually the primer manufacturers realized things were not getting better and they started raising their prices (2 or 3 times) and eventually stopped taking back orders.

Fast forward to now and ammo is starting to appear on shelves at somewhat reasonable prices ($19 for a box of 50 9mm) and with no limits being placed on orders. That is clearly the start of the next cycle. Eventually folks who can't get primers or don't want to pay $79+ will just buy ammo and then the re-manufacturers and boutique will cut down on any orders or primer consumption. In a few months primers will start to stay in stock longer and then a few months after that limits on orders will probably get removed. The exact timeline is obviously up in the air, but I do think the primer situation will be a lot better next year. Prices on the other hand will not be much better. Inflation is out of control and thus all the components to making primers have gone up. Don't expect to see a brick of primers going for less than $60.
As of yesterday in my 3 LDS there were 4 boxes of 9mm, about 25 boxes of 40 SW, and 2 boxes of 45 ACP. That was total for all 3 stores here in the Fl, Panhandle. Didn't look for Rifle ammo as my PCC fires 40SW.

Good time to have stuck with.40.

I haven't bought Win209 primers in four years. The only sellers are scammers. I have 250 primers left so don't shoot clays for practice in the off season anymore. On the other hand, I took a gamble on one box of Rio game loads ($16 ouch!) from the local shop and completely lucked out when they patterned almost as well as my handloads. I've always hunted with handloads so its nice to have a factory option to fall back on. Rabbit starts this Saturday for my state and I can make a box go all season.

I'll take a better look next time I'm in the local Bass Pro. But they had shelves full of ammo the other day, and it was not just 9mm and 5.56. Lots of other calibers. I didn't pay close attention since I don't shoot much other than 9mm and 5.56.
Bought a new scope today at Bass Pro, so checked on the ammo while I was in there. Lot's and lot's of 9mm, 40, 45 and 223/556. No 30-06, but they did have plenty of 6mm Creedmoor, 300 Savage, 30-30, 308, 350 legend, 270. Plenty of shotgun shells in 12 and 20, from buckshot to #9.

They still had plenty of CCI SPP's at the new price of $80 a brick also. Some powders also, but I didn't pay any attention what kinds as I'm already well stocked. They were unloading another tall pallet of ammo and powder when I was there.

Kinda weird how some places are flush while others are starved even in the same supply channel. If you got supplies, the panics over for you. Me, I’m still waiting for mail order to catch up. I got several orders on hold and no clue when they’ll actually ship. Locally our shelves are bare.

It's pretty hit or miss here still, a little of this and that one time and the next visit nothing. This is in southern West Virginia. Primers are $70 to $90 per K, powder has stayed around $35 to $40 per LB.

Going to be in Charleston next week, may get a chance to check the Cabela's there. If so I'll try to report my findings.

I needed LR Magnum primers. Nothing local, no good deals, couldn't even trade for them. Ended up buying off GB. Over payed, but received them yesterday. Seller shipped via USPS priority. I am glad they arrived but it left a bad taste receiving them that way.

Of course Midway had regular LR primers today. So I've another 1k coming in, the right way.

Caveat Emptor.

In primers original packaging, you could drop them out of a plane onto concrete and they would never go off. I know of a guy who recieved 7 rounds of live 14.5 x 114 mm rounds crammed into a small, bulging flat rate box. Lol. (Not saying it should not have been packed a bit better) :)

IMO, the Hazmat is mostly a money grab when it comes to primers and powder. Midway only shops a single brick of primers at a time with Hazmat shipping... and you know they are making a FORTUNE with the extra shipping charges.

I mean, really... Have you ever heard of any munitions going off in shipping? It would literally have to be caught on fire... and some extra bubble wrap isn't going to make any difference. Lol. If ANYTHING was going to go off, it would be rimfire 22 ammo, as that is the only thing where dropping it really hard on a corner might do something... and you don't even hear about that.

Hazmat shipping for primers and powder is nothing more than a money grab.

My $0.02

I’m going to have to disagree (respectfully) my delivery guy just throws my packages and probably drop kicks my 30# bullet packages. I once had a empty box as a delivery. FYI, keep the original shipping packing if you file a damage claim with USPS. They want to inspect it all.

5 figure potential fines are enough to make me not want to argue about haz mat fees.

I'll respectfully disagree. Some rules actually make sense, protecting equipment and employees. Hazmat regs in this case do make sense.

The cost of shipping should be passed on to the customer, a business would go out if they ate all those charges daily.

That said, I really look forward to just buying supplies locally again. I'd prefer to support my local shops, we have some good ones here.

I understand your point but it doesn’t matter…the regs are the regs and maybe we haven’t heard of bad things happening because the regs work, but again it doesn’t matter…

Those who set the regs, enact the laws, monitor compliance are expecting compliance lest the regs and laws become even more restrictive. But even more to the point, the opposition to our overall hobby of shooting sports have a hair trigger (pun intended) and are searching, scouring, digging for opportunities to say “ah ha” we told you they were law breakers…”ban internet sales, ban shipments to homes, ban, ban, ban.”

If we’re not law abiding, we deserve loss of privileges. Elect those who will relax the regs and laws that you don’t like. And, as others said, support businesses whose practices you like.

My .02 cents.

The reason primer prices keep going up is US!!! That's how economics works. The factories put out a supply and they get priced. The we run down and snap them up like mad dogs. So, they put out some more and raise the price. We keep buying because we are scared or hoarders or whatever the crazy reason is. So, they put out some more and raise the price. That cycle will continue unless we decide we aren't going to pay the price, or worse, we can't afford too any longer.

You want prices to go down on primers, bullets, and powder? Quit buying. Just stop. They stop selling, prices will go down until selling picks up. That's how it works. You want to pay $110 per brick? Just keep on buying and the price will go there and NEVER come down!

This is the ultimate gun control. We buy like crazy until prices get to where only millionaires can shoot. Guns will be under control then for sure. We are working on defeating ourselves.

Personally, I am not killing my retirement buying primers.

we will eventually run out of money, then primer prices will come down. Buy other things people, lots of cool guns out there, and at a discounted price

I will never run out of money...I’m a retired federal employee and your taxes keep me sitting pretty and I appreciate it.

Yeah, you will run out of money. As soon as the taxpayers do, or refuse to pay, you will be broke at that point.
