Why stop there? Try using a magnesium alloy to really cut the weight.

Too cool.

A couple of suggestions.

You could try shims under the rear scope base to bring it in line.

I see that your "forend" has holes in it. Should be some way to thread in a nylon or delrin bolt to give you a adjustable "bedding post" for the barrel.

Looks like fun

Aluminum crutch ... reminds me. I've always wanted to build a legal version of the sniper's rifle in the original Day of the Jackal movie.

The original 1973 movie starring Edward Fox, or the 1997 remake with Bruce Willis?
Frederick Forsyth gives a pretty good description of how the rifle was built in the 1971 novel of the same name.

Kewl. Definately "rat". I been contemplating building something along those lines but slightly less "ratty" for sometime now. Other projects just seem to keep getting in the way and a lot of them come with " honey do" attached. Maybe in the hotter part of this summer now that I finally added cooling to my garage turned shop last year and can stand to be in it during the hot days now.

I think your idea to try another scope just might help in the accuracy department.

1973. I haven't seen the remake. Don't think I still have a hard copy of the book, although I do have an audio version. I'll have to see if I can find it at the library.

I love it! Maybe use real weld instead of JB or a block just ahead of the action under the bbl with some hose clamps and some electrical tape and some spray paint and some.....
good job!

Back with a new plan.... There are two schools of thought when it comes to rifle accuracy: (1) Bed the action carefully and free float the barrel; or (2) Clamp the barrel to the stock and free float the action. My 1" square tube stock allows either option, so here she is again (I have added two more clamps like the one shown since these pics were taken, for a total of three):

No... no.... NO!
Put the parts down and step AWAY from the drill press!

Besides, if you're not gonna dazzle us with garage-sale, left-over bar-b-que paint finishes.... well, I mean - what's the point anyhow?:neener:

ANOTHER PROBLEM...and a simple solution!
I am using a Glenfield (Marlin) Model 15 as the basis for this project. It was/is an inexpensive "boy's rifle", and I have always had problems mounting a scope. The grooves in the receiver are very shallow, and with every scope mount I've ever tried, if you tightened the scope mounts to the point where things seemed secure, the mounts would simply pop out of the grooves and the scope would come off. As I was re-installing the scope--with a shim under the scope to (hopefully) correct the rifle's tendency to shoot 4-6" high--I noticed that my scope mount was loose (I had attached it to the receiver with a healthy dollop of JB Weld clear epoxy a few weeks ago). Sure enough, I wiggled it and the mount and scope came off. I have had little luck with epoxies on this project, so I sought the simplest solution possible....
Here she is again, finished for the moment:

That thing is getting really purty now! I actually do really like it. It will be great when you have it sub moa as a junkyard build... Keep it up!

I decided to add a cheek piece, and, since no duct tape/electrical tape has yet been used, it was a perfect fit. We have house guests this week, so no trip to the range for awhile, but I'm itching to get out and shoot this thing again.

It has been fun, but.... I slipped away this morning to shoot the rat rifle. The verdict is...it is time to pull the plug. I own some accurate rifles, and this isn't one of them.

Damned niffty project tho....

Thats how it turns out sometimes, looks like you had fun with it if nothing else, and honestly thats the point.
All the ratters i know either do it for the enjoyment of building, or from giving restorers, and other forms of car nutz, ulcers.

Sorry to see the project end; it was fun while it lasted! Thanks for posting the pics.

And I will have to re-read a copy of the Day of the Jackal. So many ideas, too little time ...

Back like a bad penny.... The scope (a freebie) was always rather wonky, and the scope mount was always a weak spot. This being a parts-box build, I did not want to spend the money to buy a new scope, but...I remembered the Williams peep sight out in the parts box. It clamps to the scope rail as well, but because it is so light, it stays put better than a big, heavy scope. So, here she is again, reborn as a plinker, with some changes to come.
