Hi this is my first post on this form, i have recently obtained a Savage Enfield No.4 Mk1* .303. I have been looking on the internet at these rifles and none look like my one. The Forestock on mine looks more modern but is the same color as the buttstock, it looks like it fits properly but i don't know much about these Enfield Rifles but it doesnt look right, the forstcock only goes half way up the barrel and has the clip for a strap about an inch back. can someone tell me something about this rifle. also under the safety switch there is my serial number and under that is AA and a 3 what do these mean.

Thanks

Im not sure where it was made i have only had it for a couple of days but my Grandfather said that he bought from a carpenter from Greenland, It says Sn24mk1* which i think means it is a Savage No.4 Mark 1*, please correct me if im wrong. I still dont know what the AA means. And what does 'Sportorized' mean???

Sporterized means a good part of the fore-end stock was cut off, the top wooden handguard's gone, and you're missing metalwork that went with it.

You rifle is nowhere near its original military configuration.
Haven't you posted this gun elsewhere?
Denis

I tried posting on my phone but i didn't think it went through lol, thanks for all the info, what are the benefits of having my gun like this? would it be worth while buying all the missing parts and restoring to how it was when it was first made? But i am still unsure of what the AA markings mean.

It looks to me like you still have the original front sight, so all you probably need to restore it is the forestock and upper and lower handguards. You *might* be able to find those parts from someplace like Sarco or Numrich.
A few years ago, I picked up a Canadian No 4 that was in good shape except for a cracked stock and upper handguard. I was able to find "new old stock" replacements (I believe from Numrich). Don't know if they still have them in stock or not.
It might be a good shooter as is, however I am the type who would restore it if possible and if it's not too pricey.

If it is a Savage, that would be American. Long Branch would be Canadian, the only two places the No4 MkI*`s were built.............Is that better, the OP already said he had a No4 MkI*...............

That's not correct. They were the only two places the No.4 Mk.I* we're made. And my Savage is an early, non-"*" one.

Could someone provide me a list of parts that i need to restore it so i can find them on the internet?

Another good source for Enfield parts is Liberty Tree Collectors. https://www.libertytreecollectors.com/productcart/pc/viewcategories.asp?idCategory=63
With anyplace like this, the best way to deal with them is to call them on the phone. Please don't rely on emailing or ordering online, that's how most people get frustrated and develop a bad opinion of a vendor. Call them, tell them what you have, and they can help you order what you need. If they want photos or whatever, then you can take it to email. You may be able to restore it for a lot less than you think.

Believe it or not, I found the best source for Enfield No. 4 parts (at least the sort of parts you would need for this restoration) to be ebay! Be sure to do the search on a worldwide basis, because many of them are in the U.K., Australia, etc.

Go to Springfield Sporters. They might have some Savage wood available.
