Okay, yeah yeah, Sigs....

But then I shot one yesterday. I've shot it before, back when I was issued a Gen 4 Glock 22...my brother-in-law purchased a Sig P229 at the same time because he was going into the Coast Guard at the same time I started the Academy. We compared guns, and I thought his Sig was nice (albeit for a .40), but neither gun really impressed me.

Fast forward a year....shot well at the Academy with my Glock 22, purchased a Glock 27 to carry as a backup, but have never carried it because I HATE SHOOTING THE 27 with anything other than a 180 grain bullet, and even then it's tolerable, at best.

So my brother in law says he wants to sell his Sig. I borrow it and take it to the range to once again compare it to my duty Glock 22. First shots with the Glock at 50', center of mass but a bit to the left. Not bad...eventually get the group better. First shot with the Sig with the full 12# DA pull....right through the right eye of the target. I had to bring the target back up to see where I hit, as I thought I totally missed the head. Amazing. The rest of the shots were in a group half the size of my Glock 22, and that's with me not knowing how to run the Sig at all.

Let's say this 10 year old, well-used Sig P229 is the first .40 pistol that I actually WANT to own. I sat there holding the gun, noticing how it is perfectly balanced in my hand. The old Sig grips are perfect, the trigger feels great, the de-cocker actually makes sense to me now...it was a bit of a pistol epiphany.

So, two questions:

1) He's asking $500 for the gun. It's in pretty good shape...he paid $700 for it used at a gun show last year, the night sights need to be re-lamped, but the gun is pretty clean otherwise. It's been well-shot, but not abused. Comes with a 12 round Sig mag and two 14 round MecGear (aftermarket?) mags with extensions. Is $500 a fair price?

2) Now that I found a .40 that I LIKE TO SHOOT, I want to sell my Glock 27. It's a Gen 4 about 1 year old, and has maybe 100 rounds through it. Night sights, three mags, two of which have Glock extensions on them. Basically like new. What's a fair price for that?

Thanks in advance for the help!

mecgear makes the factory sig mags. 500 is a good price too i would ask $500 for the 27 and take $450.

I would say $500 is a fair price for your brother-in-law's SIG P229. I paid around $700 a couple of years ago for a P229R E2 that was LNIB with night sights and two extra factory mags.

Amazing. The rest of the shots were in a group half the size of my Glock 22, and that's with me not knowing how to run the Sig at all.

Yep. I have nothing against Glocks but the Sig triggers make them very easy to shoot.
$500 is a good price. I'd buy it.

Agreed....nothing against Glock (I have three, at present...), but the Sig just speaks to me in a way the Glocks do not.

Also, the frame says "Sigarms Inc., Exeter NH - Frame made in Germany" and the serial number starts with "AL".

Does this, coupled with the short extractor, mean it's one of the "old style" P229s?

That doesn't surprise me a bit. I only have 800-1000 rounds through various Glocks but in my hands there isn't much comparison betwen the two. The vast majority of my shooting is on steel between 15-20 yards. To be fair I do have a boatload of rounds through several Sigs though.`
