My Simanov SKS in exile..

I still have Simanov SKS (yes made in the USSR!!) sitting in a gun safe at a buddy's house in Canada. I bought it about 5 years ago, including a case of 1130 rounds of ammo for just over $300 when i lived in Alberta.. It was still in the black factory grease (built in 1956) with all matching serials!!. I couldn't bare to part with it when i left for Colorado 2 years ago, but the ATF wouldn't let me take it with me.. its pretty much impossible to import a Russian made rifle into the country it seems!?!

I miss my SKS.. If anyone has any suggestions i might have overlooked i'd be happy to hear them!

Well if you want a Russian SKS, but the ATF won't allow them, and you don't want another one made in another country, you're out of options.

To all: This post is kind of a "last resort" until the Feds overturn that retarded law or agreement or whatever BS they came up with.

When i moved from Canada to Colorado i issued ATF Form 6 part 1 - "Application and Permit for Importation of Firearms, Ammunition and Implements of War" and listed all my firearms on there. The ATF sent the form back signed and stamped, but crossed out the SKS.... on movingd day we drove to CO and when crossing the border i presented the form. The customs agents searched my vehicle, verified the guns were the ones on the form and that was it..

It might be worth it to contact a field office directly and see if going through a type 11 FFL or getting a 03 of your own would help them make a determination to your advantage.

What is keeping you from just buying another Russian SKS in Colorado? There are bound to be some available if they are legal in Colorado.

I believe it can be imported if you can prove the rifle has been in Canada for at least 11 years. The price of importing it would most likely exceed the value of the rifle, especially with a Canada required pinned mag. It would also need to be marked by the importer, further reducing the value. There are quite a few Soviet SKS's on the market in this country already.

Yeah good points.. Maybe i should look into finding a soviet sks here and sell it in Canada..
