I just inspected and cleaned it. 100 rounds before this happened. Had about 6000 rounds through it total.

No, It was working fine. Until the slide came back and hit me in the face. I didn't see any cracks , When I cleaned it. Because I never would have shot it. If there was any. I was unaware. That Walther p22's had a problem with the slide breaking. You can google "p22 slide breakage" there are some other instances on there.

I still like them. It is a fun gun to shoot!! DA!!! Hopefully they have fixed the problem. But you can bet I will be looking it over really good from now on.

I have never heard of this happening to a P99, but it seems to be a somewhat common problem with the P22s.

This kind of thing will always be a risk with guns that have cheap cast zinc alloy slides (aka potmetal), like the P22 and the Sig Mosquito and is one reason I'd never consider buying one.

The P22 and P99 look similar but are utterly different guns. Walther doesn't even make the P22. It's made by Umarex.

The P99 also doesn't have a cast zinc slide. That seems to help.

The slide failures on the P22 (there have been several reported) do seem to be much more common on the fake compensator model.

EDIT: I should add that Zinc alloys and casting have improved. They don't suck as bad as they used to, but they still suck.

Actually, every single broken P22 slide I've seen has been on the fake compensator models.

If I understand MIM correctly then it can't be "cast" zinc since metal used in MIM parts never reaches melting point, even during sintering. It's injected as a powder and then sintered to expel the binders and bind the metal.

You are right. It is a sintered metal process, where powdered metal is put in a die and then high pressure is applied. Because of the inherent nature of the process, voids are left...porosity. Zinc alloys are more brittle to begin with, porosity makes it worse.

Note: That still leaves 5% voids which reduce the strength of the part vs. a traditional casting and especially vs. a forging.

Sorry to see that your slide fractured and I hope that S&W will make it right for you. This phenomena is prevalent in the 4.3" models with the "faux" compensator muzzle attachment and if you check over at rimfirecentral.com there are quite a few well documented examples of this occurring.

After learning that the slides were nothing more than a "sintered" zinc alloy ("pot metal") I got rid of mine not only for that lousy quality, but for the atrocious trigger pull and its "less than stellar reliability" (mine choked hard about once every 10-15 rounds).

I figure for the quality that I saw and the trouble that I went through with my now departed P-22, if I really wanted a gun made of "pot metal" I could go out and pick-up a used Jennings J-22 for $45-$50 and get a more durable and higher quality gun for such an effort without the necessity of parting with 300+ Dollars for the pleasure.

Mine has been almost 100% put 1k+ rounds through it in about 1 month. Had a 100 round break in where it was a little stiff, after that it was running great.

Then I got a bad batch of federal bulk. Won't fully cycle the slide. Goes 80% back on some shots, ejecting, but not chambering a round, or not ejecting at all. and double feeding. Bought some more from the same walmart, same deal. Even had a round that failed to cycle my new mark III..... But it's 22, I go through it fast enough. Got the Mark III friday, shot 1k rounds since then though the p-22 and MKIII. Only wish I had the money to shoot 9mm like that.

But I like the gun in general, slide guns are fun.... but I would trade it for something in the buckmark/ hunstman / woodsman, area. Just because I like the styling of those. In hindsight, for the money I should have bought a CZ kadet kit.... so I could have shot my "9mm" more...
