My solution for car carry

i've considered this, and my thinking (and physique :) ) match yours... but i'm not sure if me pulling up my shirt and un/holstering as i get in/out of my car would generally 'hurt things' as far as not being a target/staying below the radar when CCW.

and i have another factor: i have several young ones (old enough to see and speak, not yet old enough to know when to shut up), who know we have guns and have seen them in the 'educational context', but they have no idea i carry concealed. even when around the house it's concealed. the last thing i want to hear out of a young mouth, if there's ever an event when we're out (event = badguy pulls a gun in a public space) is "daddy, get him with your gun!!!" so instead, i'm thinking of a more permanent piece in a hidden yet accessible compartment...

notice both the 'like minded' folks who posted pics have 1911's :)

I like the idea but SC law says to carry a loaded weapon in your car without a concealed carry permit it must be in the glovebox or center console.

I'm guessing thats a Dodge of some type you are driving OP, cruise control buttons on the steering wheel look a lot like our pickup.

Looks interesting but I would worry a little about shearing off a kneecap in a minor accident. There's a reason they left it all smooth there.
I suppose that is possible but I feel the pros far out weigh the cons.

Yep, it's a Durango.

Nice work man, I completely agree with your line of reasoning. If a guy comes up to your window waving a gun in your face (or a bat, whatever) I imagine it would be tough to take your seat belt off, move your shirt, and pull the gun out, all while remaining sitting. I think your setup addresses this issue perfectly!

Alternately...

With older Vehicles, when having a Blanket on the Seat...a Holster could be easily fitted in the front of the Seat, horizontally, pointing 'back', in the Coil Springs...and the overage of the folded Blanket, covers that area...even lifting the front area of the Blanket, the slit is usually about invisible anyway.

Probably would work fine on modern Cars and Trucks also.

Old Vehicles having 'open' and roomy under the Dash areas, also had good options for keeping one underneath and up inside the Dash...done right, very easy and fast to get to.

Where do you all drive that "car is being riddled with bullets" is a likely scenario?

More of a "worst case scenario" thankfully! I know you were razzing me but basically I was saying that a perp has the upper hand if you're in your car, armed or not, unless you utilize your vehicle.

Once on a military base (where personal guns are restricted) I placed my Glock in a Fed Ex box and sealed it with tape, with a tab that would allow me to tear it open quickly. Even when they did a random inspection, they never even thoght about the box. They assumed it was mail that I had recieved or was about to send.

Nice, Tim. I've wondered how well that would work, but never tried it.

I'm still trying to train my brain that while driving I should be thinking of the gas pedal and steering wheel as the first line of defense. But if you need a gun, that seems like a real handy place to have it.

Tim, do you think this is feasible for a lefty? I'm thinking two different things.

1) If my gun is on my left hip, I do not have to worry about the seat belt the same way that a righty does.

2) Wouldn't placing the gun on the left side of the steering wheel be seen much easier than if it is partly concealed by the steering column?

I think it would work just as well for you if you used a left handed paddle holster. If it is something that you might be considering do like I did and try it out by mounting it with velcro first.

Best of luck.

I like the setup... could be done in various locations as well, depending on what a person likes, assuming legal in your area. In Florida, it would be legal if it had a thumb break type holster, as a weapon must be "enclosed".

Still, I suppose with the right officer pulling you over, that location could cause some issue...

then get the SC CWP, it ain't all that hard.

My solution

Cheap Uncle Mike's #1, $2 of nylon web strap and a buckle.

Secure while driving, ambidextrous, out of sight, no issue with seat belts.

I just use a Galco Belly Band when I drive places.

It's the best of both worlds:

A.) It is totally accessible, and not hindered by seat belts or distance, like reaching inside the waistband, under a seat, or under the dash is.

B.) It stays with me if I have to **** in no time flat.

In Florida, if you have CHL, you're better to have your sidearm on your person. I would explain but it's long and involves a personal experience story. Joe

As a carjacking victim, let me just say that it was so unexpected and they were prepared with pistol in hand, that I wouldn't have had time or even would've wanted to try and pull a pistol like that you mounted on your dash. But I can see a myriad of other situations where having a gun nearby would be handy. But nothing that would make a difference between IWB and in a holster under your dash. Actually, if I had a gun IWB, at least I could've exited the vehicle with a gun on me and maybe drawn the weapon as he entered the vehicle or something, but if the gun was under the dash, I wouldn't have had the chance to sneak it out while they made me get out of the car.

IWB-1
Dash-0

Not every set up is right for every person. We all make decisions on what we believe is the most important criteria for ourselves. Is the system I am using perfect? Certainly not. But it is the best thing that have come up with for myself and until I find something better or this totally fails I will continue to use it.

BTW, not to be a smart ass but seeing as how you apparently were not carrying at the time of your incident I would have to rule...

IWB - 0
Dash - who knows?

mgkdrgn,

That looks like a nice setup for you. I tried something similar but found my current configuration more to my liking. That is the beauty of discussions like this. As they say; there is more than one way to skin a cat.
