As all the legal troubles are over and i can breathe better i feel i can tell my story about literally being cought with my pants down. this happend about a year and a half ago.

At the time i worked seconed shift at wal-mart 4pm to 1am and slept most of the day as i did not get to bed till about 5 in the morning.

I was sleeping when i was woke up by a loud baning sound from my living room then the sound of glass smashing, i checked my servalence system, before moving to this location i lived in a not so great place and my house was broken into almost every other month it seemed like so i got a servalance system for documintation.

There was sombody in my living room i grabed the only gun i had ammo for and all i had was #8 for my .410 i then closed my door and called 911 wile speeking with the operator i told her i was armed and to let the responding officer know, i was then told by the operator to put the gun down and weight for the cops. i looked at the cam and the intruder at this point was comming down my hallway towards the bedroom, i then thru down the phone and yelled for the intruder not to enter the room or i would shoot he then yelld back where i could put my gun.

i could not belive this it seemed at this point time stoped as i saw the door knob start to turn and the door open as he steped in i pulled my gun to my sholder and pulled the trigger i swear i never knew a gun could be so loud, he went running i had missed i blew a big hole in my wall and as my shotgun was only bolt action i had wasted my shot.

he went running through my house and out the front door wile loading another shot i went through my house and steped out the front door as the cops pulled in i then relized i was standing in my front yard in only boxers and my gun in my hand, i thought the cop was going to shoot me at first when he drew his gun.

after proving it was my house and i was allowed to own a gun i live in IL i had to show my foid card. as we were getting ready to head to the police station another call comes in that there was a gun shot victum at the next house over the one officer ran over and a few min later a ambulance came. i saw the man who had just broken into my house had broke into my neighbors house or so i thought, it turns out it was their son who was just released for armed robbery 2 weeks before hand. it came out in the trial he did not think anyone was home as my car had been in the shop and was not out front. it seems i did get him just not in a big way he had 10 little pelets of #8 in his upper right sholder that he had to have removed.

The real kicker that still gets me is that he only got 6 months for parole violation. it took me 8 to get my .410 back. things i learned was to have something more other then #8 in .410 and to have something bigger and easer to load.

i hope never to have to go back through anything like this again. it is still hard to get over mowing the grass to look over and see him sitting out in their yard. i live out side of town and we have a problem with snakes i realy realy hate snakes so i wear my judge out to cut the grass and anyother outdoor activities on my property, i dont know how well the 45colt +p hp will work on the slithering snakes but it has shure kept the two leged one away.

I'm glad everything turned out okay for you, although it amazes me that the police would need to keep your gun. If you only had one, this would have left you defenseless. I guess the moral of the story is own a firearm you won't mind losing in case you'd ever needed to use it. LOL!

Powerful story. I'm sorry you had to go through all that, but you did a great job of defending yourself and your home. Since he ignored your warning and entered your room anyway, it sounds like this little punk doesn't have much to live for. I hope that you'll be able to get back to your normal life, and I hope the punk learned a valuable lesson.

He tried to rob you, you shot him, he got 6 months parole for it....and you STILL live next to him?!

If I were you, I'd seriously consider moving.
Screw that!
You can't cede the neighborhood to scumbags, how about getting a restraining order on him that keeps the asshat 1000 yards away, and make the scum move?

It's easy to say move, not always easy to do. Many factors could keep a person put.

as we were getting ready to head to the police station another call comes in that there was a gun shot victum at the next house over the one officer ran over and a few min later a ambulance came.

At this point in your story I was thinking oh no... since you missed (or thought you missed) maybe you hit your neighbor. :( Glad to hear this was not the case.

So... what's the new HD gun going to be?

the problem was not so much of the lack of guns to pick, but for the lack of ammo. i had been out to the range a few days before and used most of my stock up i skeet shoot alot with the .410 and had not done that at the range it was the only reason i even at that point had the #8.

Also he does not realy live next to me well in away he does it is his parents house he lives there when he cant find a friends couch to sleep on. his parents by the way are some of the nicest people you would ever meet, they even came and apologized for what their son did. i never even knew they had a son till this happend they never spoke of him in the 7years we had been living next to each other.

Did I read that right? After you told the 911 operator that you were armed you were told to put the gun down?

That seems insane to me.

I'm glad you made it through it okay alex. I always make a point to keep a cetain amount of ammunition on hand for my defensive arms. I am sure what I keep is very little compared to some folks on here but at least enough to get through one situation similar to what you described.

Welcome to Illinois.

In Chicago this week, a cop just back from Iraq was shot and killed by a couple of guys trying to steal his motorcycle. His father, a retired cop, shot both robbers, killing one. Cop shot. If it had been you defending your 90 year old mother, you'd be in jail.

In places like Illinois, and especially Chicago, you just don't matter. If you're not a cop, an ex-cop, or politically connected, your life is worthless.

reading this shows another reason you would make a good neighbor. in todays sue everyone world its refreshing and uncommon. i shocked a lawyer once by saying just because you can sue doesn't mean you should sue

Two things,

First: Not worth suing, probably doesn't have a dime anyway.

Second: Someone, I don't know who, has a sig line that goes something like this... Two is one, one is none.

In your case especially, if you had two weapons you would not be defensless when the police took the one used in the shooting. Just something to think about.

Aalso, make the second one the same form and funciton as the first one so manual of arms is the same.

Good luck

Security cameras: check
Firearm available: check
situational awareness: check

Sounds like you did great, just have to keep a better assortment of ammunition available in the future. :)

Since he was, or still is, on parole for armed robbery, I suggest you watch your back. He sounds stupid enough to try to get even.

+1.

If he's dumb enough to not head in the OPPOSITE direction from a loaded gun pointed at him, he's dumb enough to try his "luck" again.

If the OP likes long guns, he'd be well advised to buy an inexpensive Mossberg 12ga. pump.

I'm sure glad you were ready! Good job. Now I need to get myself some cameras.

Not to threadjack, but this is an excellent point. What kind of surveillance cameras do you have?

A few points:

First, and most important, I'm glad it worked out for you. You learned some good points too.

Second, I agree that you should move - both away from that apartment complex but also away from the prison state of Illinois. Move to a free state. You have about 46 from which to choose. Transfer with Walmart to any number of other states.

Third, you definately need to keep something more potent than a single shot .410 (loaded with birdshot) for self/home defense. That is a nearly useless weapon. If he had been armed, or on drugs, or a violent and agressive person or multiple attackers they/he could have attacked you. A 12 guage pump shotgun can be purchased for as little as $200 and is among the best home defense weapon you can buy. I recently purchased a used 12 guage Mossberg for $110!

Fourth, as a suggestion, learn to proof read and use spell check. It will help you A LOT in getting out of entry-level 2nd shift jobs and into something better. I found your post filled with typos and grammar errors and it was painful to read. Don't discount written communication as a sign of intelligence and education. This will take you far in life my friend and help you move from crummy 'hoods.
