I rented a Glock 17 today at the range with 100 rds of ammo. When I first took out the mag I was happy to see that it held 17 rounds. But the numbering on the indicators was confusing because they were all mixed up and skipped a few rounds. I have to say I didn't enjoy shooting it at all. The grip is too angled and it is very uncomfortable. The trigger pull is light but it is so small that my finger was getting irritated because of all of the rubbing/chafing on the guard. The positive of this gun is that it worked flawlessly. But IMHO is is an ugly and uncomfortable gun and the only reason I would buy it is for reliable protection.

Here is my grouping at 10 yards.

BTW no offense to any glock lovers.

Glocks aren't for everyone but as you said they are extremely reliable! Most Glock shooters say they grow on you the longer you shoot them. The trigger is always the same and you never have to worry about leaving a safety engaged when getting them into action. The trigger takes some getting used to but I never had a issue with the grip angle. The G19 or G23 is my personal favorite Glock.

I recently picked up a G19...for whatever reason, I always end up w/ one in the mix (...and I've had a few!).
I think part of it is the simplicity & total reliability. Now as for my favorite pistol, that nod goes to a diff't manfacturer all together!! ;)

Sorry you did not like the Glock 17. For a while, I though that would not ever own a plastic gun... Well I bought the glock so I could shoot IDPA, SSP and ESP classes. I now call this my Fun Gun. Don't worry about the cleaning nor picking up the brass to reload. The Glock has never fail to feed nor shoot any factory rounds that I have given it. It is like a timex watch, just keeps ticking. You can get 9mm so cheap, it does not pay to reload, yet. It is quick for me to shoot and reloads are light'n fast. Only modification to the gun were factory adj sights and extended slide release. As for the grip, I shoot a 1911 and Revolver and have no problem with change in the grip angle. The trigger feel it may take you a bit to get use to it. Keep in mind that it will reset at approximately 1/2 the travel towards release. This means that you do not need to fully release the trigger to fire the next round. Hence, the next shot can be a little quicker.

Hope your find a gun you like and keep shooting it....

I think a glock would be a great gun for protection but as for a fun gun I would rather get something more comfortable. I have a Walther P22 that is a very comfortable pistol because of the interchangeable backstraps. I plan opn getting a P99 because it has the same feature.

The indicators on the back of the mag are not "all mixed up". They start at 4 (because you can see the first 3 rounds if you look in the top of the mag) and go right to left, top to bottom in order.

Besides, the point of the indicators is to let you know how many rounds there are in the magazine--not to provide a mathematical reading lesson. Look at the bottom hole that shows a round and read the number immediately above it--that tells you all you need to know.

Sorry the trigger and grip angle didn't fit you--sounds like you're going to have to shoot some more guns to find one that works for you. (Hope that's not too much work! :D )

It's hard for me to believe that someone would not like a Glock, but many say that to me about 1911's, so , in a way, I hear ya. Personally, I love the whole Glock family. I especially like the 17, 22 and 31, and I think that they are aesthetically the most attractive guns I've seen. For what it's worth, I've known quite a few people who originally didn't like Glock's but now love them. Anyway, I hope you find a gun you like.

Try out the G19 or an XD-9. My favorite of my 9 Glocks is my 19. My 17 is a bit big and I don't shoot it as well as my 19. If the 19 doesn't do it for you then give up. Alot of people who don't like the grip angles on Glocks end up adopting XDs. I have one and it doesn't do it for me. Then again it's obvious that Glocks are right for me.

I hated Glocks the first few times I ever shot them.
Now, I don't want to shoot anything else.

Don't feel bad Boo. I tried the G17 when they first came out. I didn't like the feel of them either so I don't have one. Although I'm into 10MM now and might try out a G20. They are reliable little shuckers though.

After comparing the G17 to a lot of other service 9 mm pistols (Beretta 92FS, SIG-Sauer P226, HK P7M13, USP, Walther P88 and P88 Compact, FN Hi-Power, S&W 3rd Gen., S&W Sigmas and numerous others), I am personally convinced that the Glock is definitely one of the best, if not the best 9 mm Luger service handgun you can possibly use for personal protection.

I love mine and I think every shooter should at least own a G17 and/or G19.

I used to scoff at the Glock too, I',m a 1911 person at the core, but I picked up a G17 to take advantage of the cheaper 9mm ammo. But I have to admit that the darn thing really impressed me. Now, in addition to the 17, I own a 22C and a 33. Bloody things are reliable to a fault.

Go forth and sin no more, my son. All is forgiven.

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JOHN MOSES BROWNING

1 In the beginning was the 1911, and the 1911 was THE pistol, and it was good. And behold the Lord said, thou shalt not muck with my disciple John's design for it is good and it workith. For John made the 1911, and lo all of his weapons, from the designs which I, the Lord, gave him upon the mountain.

2 And shouldst thou muck with it and hang all manner of foul implements upon it, and profane its internal parts, thou shalt surely have malfunctions, and in the midst of battle thou shalt surely come to harm.

3 And as the ages passed men in their ignorance and arrogance didst forget the word of the Lord and began to profane the 1911. The tribe of the gamesman did place recoil spring guides and extended slide releases upon the 1911 and their metal smiths didst tighten the tolerances and alter parts to their liking, their clearness of mind being clouded by lust.

4 Their artisans did hang all manner of foul implements upon the 1911 and did so alter it that it became impractical to purchase. For lo, the artisans didst charge a great tax upon the purchasers of the 1911 so that the lowly field worker could not afford one. And the profaning of the internal parts didst render it unworkable when the dust of the land fell upon it.

5 And lo, they didst install adjustable sights, which are an abomination unto the Lord. For they doth break and loose their zero when thou dost need true aim. And those who have done so will be slain in great numbers by their enemies in the great battle.

6 And it came to pass that the Lord didst see the abomination wrought by man and didst cause, as he had warned, fearful malfunctions to come upon the abominations and upon the artisans who thought they could do no wrong.

7 Seeing the malfunctions and the confusion of men the lord of the underworld did see an opportunity to further ensnare man and didst bring forth pistols made of plastic, whose form was such that they looked and felt like a brick, yet the eyes of man being clouded, they were consumed by the plastic pistol and did buy vast quantities of them.

8 And being a deceitful spirit the lord of the underworld did make these plastic pistols unamenable to the artisans of earth and they were unable to muck much with the design, and lo these pistols did function.

9 And the evil one also brought forth pistols in which the trigger didst both cock and fire them and which require a "dingus" to make them appear safe.

10 But man being stupid did not understand these new pistols and did proceed to shoot themselves with the plastic pistol, and with the trigger cocking pistols for lo their manual of arms required great intelligence which man had long since forsaken. Yet man continue to gloat over these new pistols blaming evil forces for the negligent discharges which they themselves had committed.

11 And when man had been totally ensnared with the plastic pistol, the lord of the underworld didst cause a plague of the terrible Ka-Boom to descend upon man and the plastic pistols delivered their retribution upon men. And there was a great wailing and gnashing of teeth in the land.

12 Then seeing that the eyes of man were slowly being opened and that man was truly sorrowful for his sinful misdeeds, the Lord did send his messengers in the form of artisans who did hear and obey the teachings of the prophet and who didst restore the profaned 1911s to their proper configuration, and lo, to the amazement of men they didst begin to work as the prophet had intended.

13 And the men of the land didst drive out the charlatans and profaners from the land, and there was joy and peace in the land, except for the evil sprits which tried occasionally to prey on the men and women of the land and who were sent to the place of eternal damnation by the followers of John.

There are exceptions to every rule and in this case I guess I'm it.

I had a Glock 22 for a little over a year. Started out really liking it but as time wore on I grew to dislike it more and more.

The grip angle really wasn't a problem but the trigger was. I hated that trigger. It's like pulling thru a sponge. It felt mushy. As double action triggers go (and when push comes to shove that's what a Glock trigger really is) it even fails.

Accuracy left much to be desired too. A combination of the extra snappy recoil of the .40 S&W in that light auto and the mushy trigger just made it hard for me to get any decent groupings out of it (try minute of pie plate at 10 to 15 yards - just plain unacceptable to me). I suspect that the poor accuracy was mostly a function of me but if one can't hit what one is aiming at then the tool one is shooting becomes less than functional.

On the bright side I probably put 2 to 3 thousand rounds thru that G22 in the year I had it and it never failed once - it ate everything I fed it - rain or shine, hot or cold.

I also wore out the spring and thought that was strange since it wore out in less than a year.

NY1 Trigger spring: $5
Scherer 3.5 pound connector: $15
Having a crisp, smooth trigger in your Glock: Priceless

I have a G34. Over 4000 rounds through it so far, not one failure to go 'bang'.

The grip angle isn't 'perfect' for target shooting, nor is the platform.

However, it is 'combat accurate enough' and I feel confident in trusting my life to it's functionality and terminal performance with RA9TA Winchester Ranger ammo.

For gee-whiz I actually want to add a USP Expert in .45 to my collection. I am very very accurate with that monster.

I own a G19, and have put over a 1000 rounds through it. I love my gun and would trust it to always go boom. However, I will never buy a second glock. The gun in my opinon lacks personality. Every time I pull the trigger it is exactly the same. After about 100rnds It gets kind of boring. If I were to ever get my CCW I would have no problem trusting it, but as a target/ fun gun it leaves a little to be desired.

Every time I pull the trigger it is exactly the same.

Exactly the reason most people swear by Glocks. I prefer my firearms to go bang each and every time I pull the trigger.

First time I tried a 17 I didn't like it either. I much prefer the balance characteristics of the G19. It seems to fit my hand and balance better. I like my G19 so much so that I purchased a G26 to keep it company.

Big Glock and Sig fan...but I like shooting most all guns as long as they dont jam.....

Some of my friends think that the glock points high....I have never had that problem.....

I also really like Para Ordnance LDA guns...real nice, and nice triggers....

Hard to go wrong with any full size 9mm. Just keep looking till you find what fits your hand.

I don't care a lot for Glocks, but I carry a 17 (because it was given to me). At first I did not like the feel of the squishy 5lb trigger. I have since shot about 2500 rounds through it and while I still don't like it all that I shoot it really well. I also don't worry about throwing it down on the concrete or mud or anything else.

One side note: On the indicators, don't use those when loading. COunt your rounds. Most of the 17 mags I have loaded can hold 18 rounds, but it will get your bullets side by side in the body and none will come out after a couple of rounds and that is......well......a bad thing
