I swear this has been going on forever....Eons ago I decided to trim my collection to "just the guns I needed" a battle rifle, a fighting sidearm and a carry pistol. This has taken a long time, I sold/traded some guns I should have kept, got a few lemons, didn't like what I what I thought I would and some just didn't work out so good.
Here's the essentials...I know there's million and one options and opinions...Let's talk about them all you want(that's what we're here for) but these 3 are what worked out best for me and they fill their roles excellently.
-Saiga .308 battle rifle
-Glock 30 .45ACP sidearm
-Taurus PT709 Slim 9mm ccw

All I need is a few more accessories like high cap mags for the Saiga and better ItW holster for the 709..and who can't always have more ammo ;)
Now that these are set next year I'll need a tac. .22lr rifle & pistol.... and then here we go again :banghead:

Dunno about considering a Glock 30 as a "fighting sidearm" since it's a subcompact carry piece as opposed to the full size Glock 21. I'd think the commonality of the 21 and 36 ammo would make a perfect combination for the fighting sidearm and slim carry since the manual of arms would be the same along with the caliber. I do admire the Saigas in .308.

If it were me, I'd add a low magnification scope like an ACOG or similar within your budget to the SAIGA, a short barreled shotgun, and replace the Taurus pistol with a Ruger SR9 instead.

You've done your homework quite well I might add. I have no issues with your choices.
If nothing else, add the shotgun to the collection.

Man, that Saiga looks a lot like my Vepr. Third down from the top .... How's the trigger on your Saiga?

A long time ago I had a chance to buy this Vepr .223 from a friend of mine for $600....I passed :(

I have no complaints about the Saiga's trigger, its no match setup, but it is crisp and not very heavy....fine for my needs.

I feel the G30 is a prefect fighting sidearm.
Yes, the 21 has a few more rounds but the 30 still carries more than the typical .45 combat pistol and is interchangeable with the 21 mags(I have one on hand). Accuracy between the 21 and 30 especially in a fighting situation isn't even worth talking about. My main argument on this is I always prefer a smaller lighter pistol, they are faster to maneuver on target and easier to carry. ...and you know with a G30 you have to take "smaller" with a grain-of-salt :)

Nice looking family Pain. Would you consider that the typical 2.5 kids? ;)

I have more pistols than I "need". When the Makarov goes (hopefully today at 4:00), I'm expanding to long guns. I'm thinking about a AK47 in .223 or bigger as well as a 12ga. Just deciding between pump or auto as that will likely be my next purchase... Lookin good buddy!

Nice looking trio. I do agree with hso that while the G30 is a great platform, it is a bit small for a fighting gun. Yes, I did have one, and I never have chosen it as my primary pistol for one of my Advanced Tactical Shooting courses. I would have opted for my G21SF for primary, and the G30 for back-up.

I disagree with the G21/G36 combination. Your would lose the benefit of being able to use the G21 magazines in the G30. When I carry my G17 and G26, all of my spare magazines are for a G17. When I carry my G19C and G26, all of my spare magazines are for a G17. Just something we were taught in Advanced Tactical.

All the same, you have a nice set-up and should rightfully be proud of it.

Mike, it sounds as if you have given a lot of thought and testing to your set up. The only thing I might to add is a 12 Ga. of one sort or another.

P.S. as much ammo as you can justify having on hand,

Nice guns. If I were to have to choose three firearms, I would most likely take a Saiga .308 (with scope and over/under rings, filling the roles of both a long range weapon and a battle rifle), a Remington 870 12 ga, and some type of 1911 pistol. :)

To those that said I need a .22; I do and that is in my plans toward winter.
I'd like a Sig Mosquito and a Marlin 60/795 or maybe a Remy 597.

skip the sig mosquito and get either a ruger MK 1 or 2 or a browning buckmark

my bull barrel mark II will eat any and all ammo that will fit in its chamber...it even ejects shorts...no need for all that silly CCI mini mag business

I have a question about the Taurus. I bought the G27 for CC but IWB it's just too thick and uncomfortable. I was thinking about looking at the 709 ,how does it compare on the thickness side of things to your glock?

I take it from your collection that you're primarily focused on defensive firearms. Looks like you've got a good start and maybe that's even all you need - but you'd know that better than I would.
I also agree that you could use a .22 though. I shoot a lot more just because rimfire ammo is so affordable. I suggest finding a CZ-452. Last weekend I shot mine against a .303 British and made the same hits out to 150 yards!

I ItW appendix carry....I want the gun as slim and short as possible without being a "mouse" gun. The PT709 Slim fits the bill perfectly and believe me I've been through a lot of guns to come to that conclusion(okay so a Kahr PM9 is slightly smaller) but with $200+ price difference between a NIB 709 and a used PM9....its not that much smaller ;)). I love the baby Glocks, but(I know people think I'm crazy for this) they are just too fat and long for me to conceal carry comfortably. The 709 just disappears, I can't wait to get an even thinner holster(I use a DeSantis Stealth atm)

Here's a pic the PT709 vs the G30, sorry no 26/27 available for a comparison.

Well,I did some research and the Glock is only .14" wider and .05" longer, I don't think it is a big enough difference to matter IWB compared to my G27. It is definitely better IWB than that G30.

Thanks for the pics, a G30 is on my list.
