Our 33rd anniversary is around the cornor....so i ask my wife what she would enjoy as a gift and she said " i want a "pretty" rifle. I have 3 gun safes full of rifles, shotguns and handguns and to me all of them are "pretty", so i ask her...what do you think is "pretty"? she said..."something with nice wood and shiny bluing. not like that black plastic on i use every year".......ok
A little background: Since day one we have bird hunted together and hunted waterfowl and about 4 times a year she goes deer/antelope hunting with me. She has taken a few deer over the years but its more of a "get away" for her, though she a dandy shot with a scatter gun and not half bad with a centerfire. Also we punch paper with rimfires and handguns and shoot skeet for fun and to stay skilled. She has a couple fine shotguns and a few nice handguns that are "hers".
I have a budget of 1000.00. She is currently shooting a Savage 110 in 7mm08, wrapped in a tupperware stock. The budget is for the rifle only, as i have glass i can move from existing guns.
Currently im looking at these rifles as options Browning Medallion A Bolt/X Bolt, Weatherby Vanguard VGX, and the Winchester Super Grade. All of these can be had for close to the same money, with the Winchester being on the high side. Weight isnt a concern as she hunts from a blind or tower and rarely carries it in the field.
Im open to any ideas the cumulative mind power of this forum may have to offer.......BUT...it has to be "PRETTY!!!!! (diamond earrings and a good dinner would be so much easier!)

Concur w/mmitch - Ruger No.1 International, full-length stock, single-shot falling block action. There are prettier rifles, but they're all far more expensive. Get it in 7x57 for the full African safari feel.

Pretty Rifle

IMHO there's not much prettier than a Winchester Mod. 70 Stainless with a nice satin finished well grained Walnut stock with schnabel fore-end strapped with a Browning horsehair sling. She's already shooting the best(againIMHO) all around caliber available in the 7mm08 Rem. But then that's just me.

Rem Mo-Hawk 600 in 243 or a 660 in 243

Wow!!! All great suggestions and great food for thought! Thanks!!! Im kinda liking the falling block idea!
againstthagrane, this woman immigrated here from South Korea because her father, a South Korean military officer, and liason to US Marine troops, died of wounds he suffered in Viet Nam. She became a citizen on July 4th 1976, at the WhiteHouse, graduated from Johns Hopkins with a medical degree with a specialization in neurosurgery, recieved a commendation from Geroge Bush for volunteer service to the VA, and has raised 2 sons, both of whom have graduated from my Alma Mater, the US Naval Academy, and served as officers in our Navy, and a daughter who has just completed her residency. She works 70 hours a week, and there exist, in my opinion no greater US patriot...so YOU tell her to grow up!!! if she wants a "pretty" rifle..she will have it!

Try a Henry Golden in .30-30. The brass frame is quite nice looking and with decent walnut it should qualify as pretty.

I have just the ticket.
A Remington Mod-7 in either .260Rem or 7mm08.
I have one that's a CDL, has a matte blue finish and beautiful wood.

I put on it a Nikon ProStaff 3x-9x with Millet matte base and rings (Leupold turn-in type) with a low extended front base. It looks like it grew out of the rifle and belongs there. Shoots like it too (.260Rem). Sub-MOA with a 120gr Speer over 46.0gr of RL22 for 2,900fps. (or 44.0gr of RL17, for that matter) Deer season started saturday, but I had to fly a client. Will "break it in" on a deer tues or wed.

My wife however likes stainless and synthetic. I won 5 guns at the 1998 NPSC. When I got them from FFL, she wants to "see them". One was a Sig 239, another was a S&W mod 640. She pointed to a Ruger SP101 s/s w/2"bbl in .357mag and said "that ones MINE! She still keeps it handy and shoots it very well with .38spl +p. She says the magnums are too much of a good thing.....and doesn't care for semi-autos.

But I too have a thing for blue steel and beautiful wood. Can't argue with your wifes good taste.

Have A rifle restocked In high grade wood.just for her. just A touch of engraving and A nice finish. Make her SMILE. Sounds like she is worth it!!!

How about a CZ 550 FS, I think Mannlicher stocks are beautiful on rifles, CZ makes some very nice wood stocked rifles, however these come with a detachable box magazine, which some like myself may consider a big negitave.

The Winchester Super Grade or Featherweight are also extremly beautiful rifles and they are American made!!

The two that came to mind to me have been posted...A Ruger No. 1 Mannlicher if she'll do more admiring than hunting. A Model 7 CDL if she'll actually hunt with it a good amount.

CZ 527M carbine in .223. :)

Thank you to your wife for being a sterling example of how legal immigrants have bettered American society and become outstanding citizens.

Take a look at a Savage Model 14 too. It won't bust your budget, but it sure is pretty. In 7-08, it could be a direct replacement for the 7-08 she shoots now...

I think she wants nice wood with a beautiful finish and deep blueing. So, slow rust blue is as deep as it gets. Wood - maybe Turkish Walnut?

I'd be looking at Browning or Verney-Carron (French). But I do agree with the Husky previously mentioned.

She wants shiny blue, she probably wants shiny wood too? Older well cared for Remington with RKW finish?

I suspect it will get more attention from her if it meets all her visual requirements? How about a nice Weatherby with classic wood and blue?

Miroku makes guns under contract for lots of folks. Their blueing is superb and I have yet to see a bad piece of wood :)
