ARISAKA!

You can google for info about the year it was made and see if it is a last ditch gun or not. Take it to a gunsmith to check headspace before shooting it.

Yep, definitely a Japanese Arisaka Type 38 WWII bring-back.

It's missing the dust cover too:

Go here to decipher the receiver makings as to what arsenal made it.

I believe it was P.O. Ackley who said the Arisaka was the strongest rifle action and the only one that he could not blow up.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

Is a type 38 the longer of the two and a 99 is the carbine?

type 38 was older and used 6.5 mm jap and type 99 was newer and used 7.7mm Jap

I have the 99 my grandpa brought back, and am waffleing wether to order some of that hornady surplus rifle ammo just to try it out

I always thought any newer rifles could be "last ditch"

thank you for clarifying!

Typically ditched due to the infamous rattle. I wouldn't replace it.

I believe you're right, it would be a nice start for a new thumper. :D

Mav - heresay, aka internet rumor, as well as my old man, etc... heard in a gunstore type story.

Guy gets ahold of a rechambered arisaka. Chamber is .30-06, barrel is still 6.5mm. Supposedly fired it several times and thought it had way too much kick. Sent said gun into gunsmith, who in shock, sends it off to the NRA. Supposedly the NRA confirmed that this actually happened. Supposedly Arisaka was unharmed and still in usable condition.

Can you imagine the chamber / overall peak pressure of a .308 bullet being shoved down a .257 ish barrel???? IF this story is true, and it should be verifyable if it was the NRA that tested it, then that action should be able to hold up to any pressure you throw at it. .300RUM only has a max pressure of 65k. That .30-06 was probably in the 80+K range if this really happened. I believe that the NRA does say it is safe to rechamber/barrel these to '06, but I would check with them on that. Sounds like a good time to send an email to the NRA.

6.5x55 is a swedish round. That and the 6.5 Jap have different case sizes. I'm pretty sure Norma make 6.5 Jap anyway. Hornady might even as well. Hope you can find the time to get it shooting, CZguy, it would be a shame to shelve a piece of history like that.

found a listing for 6.5 x 55 is that the same thing as 6.5 Jap ?

As others have pointed out, they are very different cartridges. The 6.5x50mm Arisaka is very similar to the 6.5x52mm Carcano, except that the Arisaka case is semi-rimmed. Power is roughly equal, and both were commonly loaded with heavy-for-caliber round nose bullets. 6.5 Carcano load data can be safely used for the 6.5 Jap. However, the Carcano uses a .268" pill, while the Jap uses the more standard .264".

If you find a bolt, have it properly installed and headspace checked by a competent gunsmith.

I believe it...but think one little detail is wrong. I bet it was a Type 99, originally chambered in 7.7mm. ;)
