Looks like an Arisaka Type 38
see if it is a last ditch gun or not
Is a type 38 the longer of the two and a 99 is the carbine?
IIRC the Type 38 is 6.5 and the Type 99 is 7.7.
Does it have a bolt?
Typically ditched due to the infamous rattle. I wouldn't replace it.It's missing the dust cover too:
I believe you're right, it would be a nice start for a new thumper.I believe it was P.O. Ackley who said the Arisaka was the strongest rifle action and the only one that he could not blow up.
found a listing for 6.5 x 55 is that the same thing as 6.5 Jap ?
I believe it...but think one little detail is wrong. I bet it was a Type 99, originally chambered in 7.7mm.Guy gets ahold of a rechambered arisaka. Chamber is .30-06, barrel is still 6.5mm. Supposedly fired it several times and thought it had way too much kick. Sent said gun into gunsmith, who in shock, sends it off to the NRA. Supposedly the NRA confirmed that this actually happened. Supposedly Arisaka was unharmed and still in usable condition.
