N frame scarcity

I found this old Smith and Wesson in a pawn shop and decided to bring it on home. You can read more about it here. Has anyone else noticed the N frame scarcity that seems to be occuring?

Scarcity...of what? Gunsamerica.com alone has many, many different N-Frames. You should have no trouble finding an N-Frame S&W in the configuration you want.

I think he means like on a local scale. I agree with him on that. Outside of the ubiquitous 29s, 629s and tired Brazilian 1917s, there aren't too many N frames here.

GA allows you to look through the whole nation of course.

I got mine.. I saw plenty of .44 and .41 mags. when I was shopping. But like you, I haven't noticed alot of Model 27's or 28's on the street. Maybe they weren't used as much in the south.

I don't have much trouble finding N-frames here in the Northeast. I usually see several at every gun show.

The main problem I'm having is the asking price. It's impossible to get a blued N-frame for under $400. Prices for these guns are getting too steep for me.

That is a really nice looking Highway Patrolman you've got there, I'm green with envy! I'd love to own one myself one day. That is a truly great find my friend. BTW, quality used revolvers of ANY kind are a rare thing in my area, though I lucked out on a 14-4 recently. There's a nice 19-5 down the road, but the asking price is $459 .

I'd love to own a 27 or 28 one day, especially the 28. Gotta love that mean, down-to-business look of that finish. BTW, where does the 38/44 Heavy Duty fit in? Is that a pre-27? A gentleman I spoke to at a local range picked up a pristine 38/44 HD at a Raleigh gun show for $399 recently.

I introduced my sister to the joys of firearms yesterday using my first my K-22, then my 686. She fell in love with the 686. Let's just say I would not want to be a bad guy in her house if she ever gets her own gun. At 7 yards she was able to keep many of her 38 and 357 rounds within the 8 ring and she had never fired a gun in her life. Like I said, she loved the heft and beefiness of the 686 so I bet she'd really like a M28 like yours.

A Heavy Duty isn't a pre 27. It's a pre Model 20 (or mebbe 23 I get confused between the two)

Has anyone else noticed the N frame scarcity that seems to be occuring?

As we baby-boomers (and older) shooters become more financially stable, we're picking up the guns of our youth in increasing quanitities.

The younger shooters are going for the plastic/paramilitary type firearms.

When our generation passes, I predict there will be plenty of P&R, Colt, etc., wheelguns out there.

Have not noticed, but I'm in a very pro-gun area so there are a lot of any guns about. (Excepting XCRs).:banghead:

XB, so what you doing to do with your latest? Clean it up and send it off. Shoot the wheels off of it and then rebuild it? What?

Not this 27 years young shooter. Though I have my combat tupperware XD9, I have dreams of a S&W 38/44 HD, M&P pre-10, Model 19, 25, 27 or 28, 29, 65 or 66, 22/32 kit gun, a Ruger Security Six, SP101, and a Uberti Cattleman. In fact, the only semi auto I have any yearning for whatsoever is a Springer Milspec 1911A1. I'll probably never own half of them, but its fun to think about - probably because you financially stable old farts with good taste keep driving up the used prices for us young folks!!! :banghead:

My heart is warmed by all the young shooters (20s and 30s) I've seen lately at the range with their very own wheelies. Ruger GPs, S&W 19s, Taurus 66s and 627s. Like I said earlier, I think my sister is saving a little money each month for some sweet S&W 357 steel.

RUT>"What's scarce is the money to pay for them!!" Aint that the the truth!! Other than model 29s you don't see to many N frames in my area's gunshops. I can remember when very good condition 1917s were some of the cheapest guns for sale here and models 27, 28, 57 and occasionally other models were fairly common but that was quite a few years ago.

You can still find 28s pretty easily. 27s are getting scarce.

I've seen quite a few 28's on gun auction sites.
Not so many 27's.
The prices are going up, though.
