N.Y.P.D. Recruits Military Personnel in Florida

There's been a radio spot advertising the New York Police Deparment (The World's Premier Law Enforcement Agency) doing a recruitment day here in Florida this weekend. The ad says that only Military Personnel are allowed to apply and test for a position. Now, is this for real or are they just trying to get some tough guy, military wannabe's on the force? If it's for real, does that mean they are going to implement a new kind of law enforcement where a Military Mindset is the motivating force?

I hope so. Military gets 5 points towards their final score and 10 points for disabled vets. Most of my class were vets (top of the list) and some with disability. Saves a lot of grief instead of taking some suburban 20 1/2 y.o, putting them in an academic atmosphere for 5 months where they`re not told that mommy was wrong, not everyone likes them, and then dropping them into a high crime area. A military cook or clerk has more discipline than these kids.

It also provides a better background check than someone with no military background. Big city P.D.s are having trouble finding qualified recruits. It`s not like the old days when 150,000 took each test and maybe 3-5000 eventually got hired.

That's an interesting viewpoint. I hadn't thought of it that way.

dinosaur has a good point. It's not so much about the gung-ho military mindset as it is about the level of maturity and discipline. Of course, there are plenty of military personnel lacking both.

The military newspapers, like Army Times, Navy Times, etc., are full of employment offered advertising from the major police departments.

The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department did remote testing for applicants. They also conducted accelerated testing in a four day period at their academy in Whittier, CA for candidates who lived out of town.

Ah, the former Monte Vista High School. I can remeber when they closed it and sent half the students to La Serna and the other half to California High School, thus establishing the cross-town rivalry.

No way, those will be very familiar. I've attended so many of those things I couldn't even count them any more. The academy versions will, however, get the same consideration the military versions did.

Having completed academies at the state and federal levels I feel those with time in the service did better over all. Academics are not everything, keep in mind. Even if they were, it would be foolish to suggest that the only smart kids out there go to college.

A few years in the service is all but gauranteed to produce mature, responsible, dependable individuals who are comfortabe with taking and following orders without asking why all of the time.

A few years in college does not necessarily gaurantee the same.

Not to suggest that college or asking why is bad. College is great. Asking why may be too, but there is a time and a place.

Heck, when I was getting out of the Navy, I made the cut for both the Los Angeles County Sheriff and the Border Patrol. (Yo podría hablar español bastante para cualquier agencia, gracias.)

I am sure either would have been interesting. I am immensely grateful I went to college instead, especially if living in today's California or within sight of the border is the alternative.
