N330 .45acp numbers

Tagging in. I have used N330 in 9mm but not .45 yet, it wasn’t on the list of things to try. N320 is about the slowest I burn for competition loads but I’m always interested if someone has revelations.

Well, I'm sick of getting sprayed in the face with unburned powder, and since I can't find W231 the N330 numbers look very promising. Good case fill ratio and high burn percentage. There is nothing whatsoever wrong with N320, but it burns out at nearly 2/3rds with a 5in barrel. The N330 pushes the whole way at 97.2% burn. Plus as you mentioned it looks good for 9mm as well. Right now I'm using Autocomp for 9mm and it is ideal for my barrel lengths (with very good results). So if the N330 works out like it should, I would use it primarily for .45 but have the option to use it for both. I can get 4# jug of it, but was hoping to get some input before buying. The results shown based off my cartridge dimensions, but all VV powders have very well represented user data associated with it. It should be pretty darn close over my chrono.

N330 is good stuff in 9mm, not top vels but clean and accurate.
I haven't used N330 in .45 but N320 works great, about the same burn speed as W231/HP38 (but cleaner)
N320 as makes great plinker loads in 9mm.

Some 9mm data with N330 for what it's worth since you mention 9mm
I was after a 125 PF load
Mixed range brass, S+B SP, charges as thrown after seting measure

What powder sprays you in the face?
I also was impressed with the output of GRT. I may have to try that. I developed a competition load for 9mm with N330 but that was primarily for back up reasons. It behaves like the other VV powders I’ve tried and will look to try it in .45 but that won’t be for a while. Please get the 4# jug and let us know how it works out!:)

Agree on all counts

I tried N330 in .45 ACP, but prefer N320 or N340

On paper it should work great, should

Although I've owned my .45 for decades, I have not really done a lot of work with it until recently. I decided to spruce the Ol' boat anchor up with among other things, trigger polishing and a new RemSport barrel.
The results were amazing and have renewed my interest greatly. I've tried Accurate No5, Win Autocomp both have poor burn rate and sd/es but clean up some in higher charge weights, but both left me picking powder from my teeth. I have a nearly full pond of Universal that I tried once... I don't have the inclination to individually hand weigh each charge with that flaky stuff.

I've been using GRT for a couple years and it has taught me just because book data says something "will work" does not mean it is the best choice, and to stop trying to find a one size fits all. I have a pistol I was convinced was a "lemon" for years and all it was is the wrong powder causing high ES/SD. GRT could have saved me a shelf full of partial jugs of powder had I used it sooner.

GRT is free to use, but for your choice of 1, 2, or $3 a month I became a Patreon supporter for all the added benefits.

Unless you are shooting long distance with it the ES/SD don’t matter if it groups well.

A few questions if I may...

Why do you prefer N320 or N340 over N330?

How is the recoil impulse (felt recoil) different between the three?

How do the three VV powders compare to HP38/W231?

I mainly use W231 in my 45acp, but have tried (and like) N320, although my experience with it is limited.

Found accuracy more quickly with N310, N320, & N340. I was quite surprised when N330 seemed finicky in .45 ACP, should have worked great, does so in 9MM.

It’s been so long I don’t remember the recoil impulse well enough to say, except for the obvious, N310 is the quickest and can get snappy if you try for too much velocity, but my CZ97 loves it under the Zero 185 Gr JHP, N320 is great for target/plinker loads, N340 for full power. N330 may have excelled at full power as well, but I was looking for plinker loads with it.

W231 is great stuff in.45 ACP

Further research and modeling has shown that N330 in .45acp is suitable for only high power loads. As charge weight and resulting velocity are reduced, burn ratio drops quickly to unacceptable levels. Physics and math tell us that will result in erratic combustion, and the resulting es/sd are a large portion of poor accuracy.
For "range ammo" my findings show N330 unsuitable, which is just as well because the places I found it are all gone now anyway.

N320 shows numbers closely emulating W231 but with a higher case fill which is a good thing.
My research is done, I will keep looking for either N320 or W231 whichever I can find first.
