Hunting report / summary (the good, bad & ugly)

for Nakoda Runners Outfitters, owner Randy Pooyak

Target game: mule deer / whitetail combo hunt

Date of hunt: Nov. 4-9, 2023

Area: North Battleford, Saskatchewan Little Pine, Poundmaker & Sweetgrass First Nations reserves

Good / OK:

Price - $6500 US for 6-day combo hunt. Keep in mind that tags & lodging / food is not included. This adds another ~$2000 us to the cost. Total cost of $8500 US plus your travel cost into Saskatoon.

My guide was friendly and as a lifelong resident of the reserve knew the area well.

Staying in a hotel was a little inefficient for travel to and from the hunting areas but was very comfortable. I was also able to “compare notes” with other hunters outfitted with Nakoda Runners every morning at breakfast.

Process to bring hunting rifle into Canada is very simple and streamlined

Bad:

Quality of game. On a 6 day hunt I saw mainly does and a few small bucks. I shot a 141” mule deer on day 3. Of course, no one forced me to pull the trigger on this smallish buck but he was THE ONLY mule deer buck I saw! I spent the next 3 days hunting whitetail, the best buck I saw was a 120” 8 point which I passed. Over several months of phone and text conversations with the outfitter I was led to believe that 170+” mule deer and 150+” whitetail was a reasonable expectation on trophy quality. His advertisement on bookyourhunt.com made the same statements (he has subsequently been removed from this site due to client complaints). In the outfitters defense, the weather was less than perfect during my hunt BUT it was not bad either. Average weather with far less than average opportunity.

After hunting a few days, it became obvious that the areas were over pressured and basically “shot out”. The outfitter did not have exclusive access to the hunting areas which he shared with several other outfitters. Additionally, all residents of the reserve can hunt any species at any time.

The outfitter advertised heated, baited blinds. There were none set up, I hunted out of one of my guides friends blinds for a few days but as stated above – very little game. The “spot and stalk” hunting was not what one would traditionally expect. A better description would be “jump out of the truck and shoot”. As you can imagine, this method does not lead to much success or satisfaction of hunting ethically.

When I arrived in North Battleford for meet and greet the outfitter handed me off to his nephew who he had subcontracted to help with his hunts. His nephew paired me with a guide who it turns out was another one of his uncles. This was a bit unexpected.

Ugly:

While my guide was a “nice guy” he was late 2x to pick me up for the morning hunts and also had a “day job” grading roads on the reserve. In my opinion, he should have been scouting rather than grading the roads during the day when I was sitting in an unproductive blind. We also had to cut the first evening hunt short and take an extended break hunting mid-day the following day so he could get his brakes fixed. Turns out the issues existed long before I came, not a last-minute development. In his defense, I do believe he tried but the hunting areas were just not productive enough to be successful – I did give him a tip for his efforts as the poor hunting areas were beyond his control.

There were fellow hunters in my hotel booked with Nakoda Runners that reported their guides did not know the area and that their guides encouraged them to shoot at animals that were across the fence on private property. After speaking with some of the locals it turns out it is common practice for reserve residents to “poach” deer on private land surrounding the reserve as once they get the carcass onto the reserve, they are immune to enforcement. It turns out that many of the larger bucks bragged about are taken in this manner by some reserve residents.

Pricing of tags and the hunt. The hunt contract stated clearly that tags were $500 each and that baited stands were included in the hunt. My subcontracted outfitter tried to charge me $700 for the tag. When I refused the price went back to the original $500! One of the other groups hunting with this outfitter was offered “premium” baited stands on another reserve but it would cost an additional $300 per day per hunter!

The outfitter (Randy Pooyak) showed several of us a picture of an absolutely huge whitetail he stated was taken by one of his hunters that day. When I asked where, he replied that he saved his best spots for return clients and that if I returned next year, he would take me to the better spots. (I knew without a doubt that he was a con artist at this point).

I did contact several references given to me by the outfitter prior to booking. He has several that had positive reviews. In retrospect, it seems plausible that no outfitter would give you a contact that had not been satisfied and if you book 15 -20 hunts per season you are bound to have a few successes over the years. If I were to do this again, I would ask for last season’s references only and see how many he could produce.

These next 2 points may be trivial in nature but here they are: A. The guides routinely threw trash out of the window which I found very disturbing. B. While I am not offended by profanity it becomes a bit tedious when every sentence on any subject starts and ends with an F bomb.

This one is hard to describe: Apparently it is common practice on the reserve to “run down” a deer if it is caught out in an open field. While I did not personally see this it was a practice described to me by my guide and another hunter that I visited with at the hotel did experience this behavior from his guide.

Final comments: this hunt / outfitter appears to be OK on the surface but do not be lured into booking thinking you have found a bargain. It is my opinion that you will not only be disappointed but more than a little disgusted as well. For many of us Saskatchewan is a “dream hunt”, if you decide to go there my advice is to avoid Nakoda Runners outfitters and its owner Randy Pooyak. My motivation for writing this extensive review is to warn fellow hunters concerning this outfitter. My opinions concerning this hunt / outfitter are a result of my direct experience.

Bad Experience with Nakoda Runners Outfitters owner Randy Pooyak.

I just returned from my first Mule Deer Hunt in Saskatchewan Nov. 11th - 16th with Randy Pooyak owner of Nakoda Runners Guide Service in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. I had the exact same experience as the Hunter above! But much worse! I found Nakoda Runners on the same website "Book your Hunt" he contacted me right away offering a Trophy 180" plus Mule Deer 6-day hunt for $ 4500.00 plus $ 500.00 for the license. Travel Hotel and food were extra. I asked him for references. He provided me with 2 reference, Greg from Louisville KY. and Zac from Marquette. MI. I spoke to both references, and they provided me with great reviews and photos of big Mule Deer they had taken over the years. ( I believe them to get big discounts for providing great references)
Randy sent me a contract and I sent him a $500.00 deposit for a 6-day hunt November 11th- 16th. I asked him for a Guide named Sonny (His Bother) but when he met me at the Gold Eagle Motel In North Battleford, He introduced me to a young 23-year-old Native and said that he would be my guide. My first red flag! He told me that he was an experienced hunter and knew the reservations well. I objected, but he told me that he was shorthanded and had no other guides available. I agreed to give it a try. Right from the first day, I discovered that this was his first guiding experience, and I knew more about Mule Deer hunting that he did. He was a college student on holiday for a week and Randy offered him $ 1000.00 to be my guide for 6 days. He had a Little Pine Reservation Mule Deer Tag with him. I discovered that he had never even been on the Little Pine Reservation land, let alone hunted on it. He was from the Sweet Grass Reservation. My second red flag was that I was not allowed to keep the tag and my guide would take it home with him every night. My conclusion was that if I did not shoot a mule deer, Randy would keep it for the next group of hunters. The guide also drove an old Dodge Avenger SUV that was not capable of traversing the terrain, had mechanical issues and did not have enough clearance to drive through picked fields. So, Randy told me to go ahead and use my 4x4 truck and he would reimburse me for gas. Sound Familiar? The first day of Driving around scouting, we saw a nice Bull Moose. My guide called Randy to see if he could get a tag for a Moose. He said yes, for an additional $2000.00. I agreed. The next day my guide had a Poundmaker Reservation Moose tag. We found the Moose on Poundmaker land and I took the moose. We tagged the moose and Randy took it to the Meat processor. The rest of the week was tough hunting. The Mule Deer were not moving, we had no snow on the ground, and it was 52 degrees during the day. The Little Pine Land and reservation had been hunted hard! you could tell by the number of truck tire prints in the fields. We had only scene 3 does all week. On Friday, we got lucky and found a 5X5 130" Buck with a doe bedding down in some grass we were walking. It was out last full day of hunting, so I took this Buck. Tagged him and Randy's guys came and took him to the meat processor. That afternoon, I followed Randy to the meat processor to pick up my Moose meat and antlers. I asked Randy if the tag on the Moose and Mule Deer antlers and meat were export tags. He told me yes; I would have no problem taking them into the US. But the Mule deer had not been processed yet. So, I donated the Mule deer meat to the Tribe and said I would come back later for the antlers. The processor said that he could get the cap and antlers ready by 8:00 PM. I drove back out to the meat processor in the dark who lived out in the country to pick up my Mule Deer cape and antlers. I could not read the green tag on the antlers being so dark while loading them into the bed of my truck.
I left the hotel in North Battleford 6:00 AM since I had a 20.5 hour drive ahead of me. I drove to North Portal US Border Check Point. I told them I had 2 animals. I went in to fill out forms and they came out to my truck to inspect the tags. They told me that the moose was tagged with a Reservation tag and not a Saskatchewan Export Tag. The US Border Patrol Wildlife agents convinced me to go back to Canada, meet with the Saskatchewan Conservation Police and give a statement. I wanted to do the right thing and testify against Randy Pooyak to prevent this from happening to other trusting hunters going to Saskatchewan. I met with Jacob at the border, and they convinced me to come back to his office and give a statement. I did not realize that they were setting me up for failure!! They recorded my statement, made a call to North Battleford and charged me with transporting 2 animals without the proper tags and attempting to export 2 animals without the correct tags. My Mule Deer was tagged for the Moquito Reservation when I place a tag on my deer for the Little Pine Reservation. Randy had switched the tags!! I was fined over $ 7500.00. They confiscated my Moose Meat and both the Moose and Mule Deer Cape/Antlers. They did not even ask me for Randy Pooyaks phone number! The said that If I wanted to testify against Randy Pooyak, they would have US Fish and Wildlife get in touch with me for a statement. Bottom line is that there is nothing the Saskatchewan Conservation Police can do to a Native Canadian living on a Reservation. I was defrauded by Randy Pooyak and he will continue to defraud US Hunters until the Candian Government stops him. I did everything I was told to do and was upfront and honest about everything that happened. But, I am the one left paying the fines. I tried calling Randy Pooyak and his references and they are not returning my calls.

I feel stupid for letting Randy take advantage and lie to me. I want to let other hunters know about Nakoda Runners and Randy Pooyak. His hunts may sound very reasonable, But let the buyer beware. He is a crook and will lie to you about everything. DO NOT TRUST HIM. I gave him $ 7000.00 for 2 hunts and tags. I also gave my young guide a$ 950.00 tip. With hotel, Food and gas this hunting trip will cost me almost $ 10,000.00 and I have nothing to show for it. Do not make the same mistake I did!

It's Good of both of these hunters to give these reports here. I'm sure it's not easy to admit that they were conned.
I hope anyone who plans/hopes to hunt in Canada has read this and will avoid getting the same "treatment" by these thieves in the future.
It's a pity that it's not an actionable offense for prosecution.

Any legal recourse for breach of contract?

I’m honestly not shocked by anything I hear about guided hunts any longer. I think I’ve seen it all. My last guided hunt in the USA was for Barbary Sheep in New Mexico. It was an epic boondoggle, lies were told, money was stolen, sheep numbers were not as promised, poaching occurred, threats were made… Etc etc.

I just don’t even know how to pick an outfitted hunt in the US or Canada without taking the risk of a tossing my money away via massive fraud as many guided hunts turn out to be.

I’m sorry to hear of these experiences with that outfit. And I’m here to tell you, having grown up in New Mexico. Indian reservations tend to be trash heaps. The old ad with the Native Chief crying over litter on the wild lands is an absolute farce!

Also being native doesn’t make a person an untrustworthy, lying snake. But it doesn’t prevent it either and they know darn good and well you’ve got no legal recourse against them on native land.

Buyer beware.

And thank you for posting about these crooks.

I wrote about Randy here in 2019.
Same B.S tactics. He is nothing but a liar, so much so he goes to sweat lodge to atone for his sins. His words.
Back then I contacted the site his ad was on and after talking to them and giving them the rundown and told him to talk to the game cop in the Battleford area. They ended up pulling his add.
I was booked through GHR booking agent. Read my thread about the incident as I feel the held some responsibility.
I had been checking the internet for Randy to resurface and he finally did last year.
Sorry you got scammed. Carma Randy it’s coming for you!!!
