The following was asked of me at the NCGUN ( http://www.ncgun.com ) mailing list and I thought my answer my be useful for someone else here.

Question:
I'm planning to vacation at Ocean Isle Beach NC next month. (it's a little island just north of the SC border) I e-mailed the local officials regarding CCW but they haven't responded. I have a Florida license and live in NJ. Anyone know if they (Ocean Isle Beach) can prohibit me from carrying? Am I legal there?

Answer:
Technicaly yes since NC and FLA have reciprocity. However, NC is a weird state. County Government by way of the county commissioners have an incredible amount of power and can enact their own ordinances that are in conflict with state law. Thus, if the county where Ocean Isle is located has enacted a " no firearms " ordinance even though state law allows it, then it's no firearm carry for you. However, the only county I am aware of that has an ordinance affecting guns that is in direct contradiction to state law is Durham County ( which Ocean Isle is not in ). So, I'm pretty sure you are ok as long as you follow the rules in NC as outlined at http://www.packing.org/state/index.jsp/north+carolina.

Another point. We vacation in Holden Beach every year - Next beach up I think. I bring guns down so I can take my nieces and nephew shooting if they want, since this is about the only time we see them. Reading the fine print in the lease one year it prohibits firearms on the property. It may vary from realtor to realtor. (Who reads the fine print officer?)

Here's the actual statute pertinent to the situation, if needed.

§ 14‑415.23. Statewide uniformity.

It is the intent of the General Assembly to prescribe a uniform system for the regulation of legally carrying a concealed handgun. To insure uniformity, no political subdivisions, boards, or agencies of the State nor any county, city, municipality, municipal corporation, town, township, village, nor any department or agency thereof, may enact ordinances, rules, or regulations concerning legally carrying a concealed handgun. A unit of local government may adopt an ordinance to permit the posting of a prohibition against carrying a concealed handgun, in accordance with G.S. 14‑415.11(c), on local government buildings, their appurtenant premises, and parks. (1995, c. 398, s. 1.)
