Spent this am down at my bench setting up a neck sizing die for my .30/06

I gradually adjusted it down to where the work stops right at the shoulder of the die. I believe this to be correctly set up

another dumb Noob question i just thought of:

Can I use the same die without adjustment for my .300 win mag or is the shoulder different?

Thanks

The die will have to be adjusted if you change cartridges. The neck shoulder junction is a different height from the cartridge base.

Brand/make of die would help. I guess No. & No, if your using the Forster BUSHING BUMP NECK SIZING DIE There is .0489" difference in body diameter & shoulder taper is different. But try it on 1 case, cant hurt. Dont force it.

Hornady neck sizing die

Gotcha on the 300 win mag question

Sure appreciate the collective wisdom here!!

I adjust neck sizers so they only size most of the neck. Running them all the way down isn't necessary, and I personally think it can pile up brass flow at the shoulder, I guess that's just my style though.

Cool.

I like the idea of neck sizing and hope it will translate to better accuracy and case life.

FYI, if you neck size you can expect to need to FL now and then to bump the shoulders back a couple thou. You'll know when it's time to bump, the bolt will get stiff when chambering a cartridge. Other than that, necking is as simple as it gets.

Like Witchhunter and Gamestalker said, sizing some of the neck works for me as well. I size about 1/2-3/4 of the neck. The unsized portion of the neck helps to center the neck of the cartridge in the chamber's neck. Another method of handloading for your particular rifle that can yield top accuracy.....

So just back out the standard sizing die is what you are saying?

I'll try and google that.

Problem with neck sizing with a regular die is that the body of the case isn't held in place, and you can get neck run out.

I use Lee Collet dies. IMO works better than regular dies that are adjusted up. You'd have to use ones that are caliber specific

Gotcha

I will pick up a .25 and another .30 neck sizing die and be good to go

Spent all day in the basement lol. Momma is making rumbling noises. Guess I'd better get cleaned up and take her to dinner.
