I am curious if I could use one neck sizing die for 2 different cartridges of the same caliber. Say use a 30-06 neck die for a .308 or a .270 Win neck die on .270 WSM cases?

In both of your examples, the longer die will hit the shellholder before the die touches the neck of the shorter case. In addition, the WSM case wouldn't even fit into the body of the .270 die. With careful adjustment, a neck die for the shorter case could be made to work with the longer, but not worth the trouble IMO.

Nope!
As helotaxi said, a short case caliber will not reach the neck sizing portion of a longer caliber die.

O.K. than!
How bout I get a short caliber die and use a long caliber in it?

Nope too!
The case body diameter on a 30-06 for instance, is .441" right behind the shoulder.
A .308 case is 454".

It would be even worser trying to stuff a .270 Whizzem case in a .270 Win die.
.441" dia. vis .5381" dia.

Suggest you do some looking at the cartridge spec drawings & measurements in any good reloading manual, and you will find a very few combinations that "might" work.

But in the grand scheme of things, thats why they make specific caliber dies for specific calibers.

While I still agree it isn't worth the trouble, I fail to see where/why the die (that isn't doing any sizing) being bigger than the case is problematic.

I use a 257 rob collet neck sizing die on a 257 ackley, but those are pretty much the same case. most dimensions are the same. When I was marveling at the cleverness of the die I did observe that it really wouldn't work on anything other than the case it was designed for. I appreciate you wanting to save a buck where you can, but dies aren't THAT expensive. (and I'm a penny pinching fool)

I appreciate the responses. Neck sizing dies are kind of a new experiment for me.
It's just that a buddy had one for a 30-06 that he volunteered to loan me for my .308. And I kind of like the whole idea of the Lee collet neck die but they don't make one for my .270 WSM. So I'll go ahead and buy the collet dies for the more common calibers and buy another brand for the WSMs.

The die body needs to be near case body size to keep the neck centered.

Big .270 WSM case in a .270 Win die won't fit.
Small .270 Win case in a .270 WSM die would be a sloppy fit in the die body, and could neck-size off center.

Don't see how with the decapping stem in place. I don't think that my Forster neck die for .308 even touches the case other than at the neck. If it isn't touching, 0.001" is the same as 1". "Near" doesn't do anything.
