That Zastava M88 is, IMO, a joke. Save your money for something else, or if you're going to waste it instead give it to me and I'll knit you a sweater.

I figured that. I'm not impressed by the photos or articles about it. Trust me, I very carefully research a pistol before buying, paying special attention to reliability and durability above all else.

I'll take a gander at the Hungarian BHP clone if I run across one, or I may be lucky enough to come across a reasonably priced Browning or FN made HP...

I've recently acquired a stainless steel CZ75-B and it's a double/single with cock and lock. It's quite the shooter. Beautifully made too. Almost as nice a trigger as my 1911 (i now sound like all 1911 owners). But it's a VERY nice pistol.

Many think they are junk, but I handled a Taurus 24/7 Titanium today. I have no idea how it shot, but it was one of the nicest looking, best feeling pistols I've ever held. Had a great trigger as well. Based upon it's lightness, it's probably a muzzle-flipper, but I could be wrong. I noticed that some Taurus models had small manufacturing imperfections on the ramp and other internal pieces. This model and their PT-92 line looked very clean, polished, and well put together. The PT-92 was really heavy and lovely and not a pit nor mark anywhere in or outside.

I have no desire for a lightweight pistol. I want heavier to absorb recoil and stay on target. I also do not want a polymer framed handgun because to me, they transmit the vibration of firing too much.

The PT-92/PT-99 is one of the few Tauruses I'd buy. I'm still evaluating night sight and other accessory and parts availability (like Beretta locking blocks for it). One of the definite pluses in the Taurus 92/99 series favor is that MecGar makes mags for them, so no worry about magazine availability or trying to modify Beretta mags, as I have heard must be done.

I have owned FEG and Browning HPs, PT92s, 9mm 1911s, and many different CZs - because I also wanted to find the perfect Condition 1 capable metal-framed 9mm pistol. In other words, I've been on this search for many years now. During this search, I have bought at least one of each - just to be sure that I'd really be happy with the answer. (I've also owned Astra 70s and other oddball SA/Condition 1 capable pistols, but the ones listed above are the ones currently available and supported by either the manufacturer or the aftermarket.)

I can say all sorts of nice things about all of these pistols. None of them are dogs, and I'd happily own any of them if that was what was available to me.

If I had to pick the best bang-for-the-buck and best all-arounder for anything short of gonzo use, it would be the FEG HP. If I had to pick the most economical and easiest to use and likely the one most suitable for abuse, I would pick the Taurus. If I had to pick the sexiest and perhaps the best-supported of the lot, it'd be the CZ75. If I wanted one with true heirloom status, I'd pick a BHP. If you ask me what I carry and use today (aka 'the answer', at least for me), it'd be a 9mm 1911.

Why am I not suprised? rbernie, you have followed the same path I was likely to follow.

I'll figure I'll eventually end up with a 9mm 1911. But I probably would have gone through the CZ, BHP, and maybe the PT92 first. I just don't have the money for a 9mm 1911 that would be worth a damn, so CZ-75, PT-92, or FEG or used BHP it shall be first...I'm leaning towards the CZ.

If being able to press-cock the pistol is important to you, you're limited to only the BHP (and clones) and 5" 1911s. If you don't care about such things, the CZ is a fine place to start. Sadly, the days of sub-$400 CZ75s are long gone. Good news is that you can still find them for under five bills if you try, and the 16rd Mecgar magazines can be stocked up for a rainy day at $25/ea.

Keep in mind that my Springfield 5" 9mm 1911 was $650, lightly used. Also, both Taurus and Rock Island / Citadel are stating an intention to sell a 9mm 1911 within the next year or so. They do not need to be viewed as solely $1000 pistols....

I wanted a Springield EMP. Too much money for me. I ended up with a CZ RAMI. While it is a CZ, it feels completely different than the 75B that I have. It fits me like a glove.

I shoot a witness elit match,it is a SA that can be carried cocked and locked 4 3/4" barrel all magetic metal and can be bought for under 500 dollars with a retail of 640. Also change to 6 different calibers for 200 each with a upper change only.

rami

3 rd vote for the rami, specially with the extention, fits like a glove!
