Note: .308 as in 7.62x51.

Please no 7.62x39 recommendations, or recommendations for .223/5.56.

I'm specifically looking for 7.62x51/.308 (and I do realize the difference between NATO and sport loads). It's ok either way (7.62x51 or .308 are both fine).

Modern day currently produced, not milsurp.

Must be extremely reliable and high-quality. Your recommendations (other than .308 AR's)?

I have FALs, but my favorite battle rifle is my Garand. Mine's a CMP gun that I got fully rebuilt and converted to 7.62x51, but you could buy a new one from Springfield. It's tough, accurate, reliable, has great sights, great trigger, easy to work on, easy to reload, and just looks great.

DSA is making FALs in various configurations that are new builds.

Springfield is making M14 clones, as are Fulton Armory and a couple other places, I believe.

JLD (did they change names?) have the PTR-91 clone of the G3.

DPMS, Armalite, Bushmaster (?) and I'm not sure who else are doing AR-10 type rifles.

Saigas are available in 7.62x51.

Not sure who else currently has 7.62x51 rifles in production. Keltec should have their bullpup .308 coming out soon. FN may be releasing a civilian version of the SCAR-H sometime in the next few years. HK will continue to refuse to sell HK 417s to civilian shooters.

Current production...
Armalite AR-10 (AR type)
DPMS LR-308 (AR type)
DSA SA-58 (FAL type)
Fulton Armory M-14 (M14 type)
Fulton Armory Titan FAR.308 (AR type)
Izmash Saiga-308 (AK type)
JLD PTR-91 (G3 type)
KAC SR-25 (AR type)
Springfield Armory M-1 Garand
Springfield Armory M-1A (M14 type)
Vector Arms V-51 (G3 type)

Coming soon?...
FN SCAR-H
Kel-Tec RFB

Where did you read that FN would be producing a civilian MK17 (SCAR-H)?

I would be interested in that if it happened.

Thanks for the info so far guys. :)

http://www.defense-update.com/products/s/scar.htm

"On February 2006, at the Las Vegas SHOT Show in Nevada, FNH announced plans to introduce within two years (ca. 2008) a semi-automatic version of the SCAR modular rifle system, designed for the law enforcement and commercial markets."

http://www.fnhusa.com/press/releases_consumer/detail.asp?id=7

"Production of a semi-automatic only version of the innovative modular rifle system with a target launch to LE and commercial markets will potentially be available in the next two years."

Well, that new Kel- Tec bullpup rifle is going to be in .308.
M1A/M14
G3
AR10 Variants
BM-59
Ruined M1 Garands
FAL
SIG 510
Howa Type 64
Modern BAR chambered in .308

Some might be milsurp, some aren't available for civil use, but just wanted to throw some others in.

I have a feeling the SCAR would look fine in all black if they make it like that.

The SIG510 was mentioned, is that still produced? I thought it was long gone?

ETA: Nevermind I see you mentioned that possibility.

Too bad the HK417 isn't made in a civilian version. :(

Although it looks relatively similar to an AR-10. What's the difference? Different action?

"...Modern day currently produced, not milsurp..." None that you can legally buy. There are lots of commercial copies though.

I don't necessarily mean military issue. I consider a Bushmaster to be just as much of a battle rifle as an M16.... just because it isn't military issue and isn't full auto doesn't mean it isn't a battle rifle IMO.

What about the Remoington 7600 Police Pump gun. I have one and it is as sweet as. 10 round mags do ok, but if I was in a real sheet fight, a 20 rounder would be nice.

I don't like them but I have not seen the Cetme posted.

What is modern? There are few truly modern military rifles that are available to the public. Most are based on 30-50 year old designs.

You can get an m-1 rebarreled to 7.62 NATO----but you can also put a $15.00 adapter in a regular .30-06 M-1 w/ some permatex and it will eat .308.

I keep mine in .06, but I have that adapter in the stock just in case--something to think about. And .06 is still a bargain for the M-1 from CMP right now.

Does my Semi-1919 count? I have it in A6 configuration...and they are currently being made by various manufacturers..:D
