You can get an m-1 rebarreled to 7.62 NATO----but you can also put a $15.00 adapter in a regular .30-06 M-1 w/ some permatex and it will eat .308.

And what happens if a round pulls the adapter out upon extraction? The navy tried adaptors, and they did not work well...

The ONLY "modern" .308 battle rifles are the AR types from DPMS, Bushmaster and Armalite.
Acutally, the only "modern" 7.62x51/.308 battle rifles being made would be the yet to be released FN SCAR-H and Kel-Tec RFB. Everything else, is a modernization of a design from the 50s & 60s.

You didnt mention price, either a PTR or an M-14 I dont think you can go wrong with either.

Over at the arfcom forums (yes, I know) a magpul employee mentioned the possibility of the masada being produced in .308. I think that's some ways down the road if it happens though.
