need advice on rem700 gunsmith services

basically, i want to take a perfectly good remington 700 varmint gun with a brand new, never fired barrel, and put threads on the end of a 26" barrel so i can attach a suppressor.

my assumption from previous positive experiences on non-precision rifles is that my reasonably competent local gunsmith/machinist can thread my barrel.

but i'm not confident that just any machinist/gunsmith can reattach my barrel to get the same accuracy i expect to get from a hand-built rifle from the factory.

does that make sense? am i paranoid? what should i do?

a) try my local gunsmiths (who are more interested in full-auto than benchrest/varminting) first then move to plan b if they cock it up?
b) send it back to the factory with a request for the custom shop?
c) find someone who specializes in precision barrel work?

if b/c, who would you recommend? what is a reasonable price to pay?

You don't detach the barrel from the receiver to thread the muzzle. You're working with the other end of the barrel.

I would probably recommend GunDoc @ Great West Gunsmithing. I think he charges in the neighborhood of $50 to thread a muzzle.

Too, there's not just a whole lot of hand assembling of the Rem 700 anymore. It's mostly been automated.

(i don't really know much about gunsmithing at all... i mostly concentrate on shooting them but the gun in question is a etronx, which i understand were mostly hand-assembled and the last rifle i had threaded required removing the barrel. i'll take your word for it though)

If the gunsmith has a lathe with an adequate hollow headstock he doesn't have to remove the barrel to thread it.

I assume you have the suppressor so you can get the right threads; they are not standard.

Totaly worth it. I shot my brother's modified Rem 700 (DL did the work), and that thing is amazing. HIs is .308 but I'm sure that he would do a bang up job on yours.

jim, yep. it is actually a quick detach to a flash suppressor. so it'll be pretty easy to send the flash hider along with the barrel for fitting.
