My father, who owns a few guns but never uses them and overall has no clue, would like to sell two:

rifle = SIG 970 bolt-action 30-06
shotgun = Rem 870 "Automaster" 12g

The rifle he bought a few years ago from a shop - presumably had the usual background check but has no paperwork including no receipt.
The shotgun he WON at a local raffle in the 1980's - he does not recall any FFL transfer, just was handed the gun! He has no paperwork regarding that either.

He lives in upstate NY (fingerlakes region).

So. . .
1. Can he sell these, given the lack of paperwork?
2. Can he sell them out of NY state (say at my local Cabela's in MI)?
3. Can *I* bring them in to my local shop to sell (in MI)? That's what he'd prefer, for me to take the guns and sell them for him. . .

Any help will be much appreciated!

Thanks! Glad to hear his lack of paperwork is not an issue. But then, if it's OK for HIM to wander into a store with the guns and sell them as his own without proof, why couldn't I do the same? I do want to stay above board on this, though - no real reason to do otherwise, just "convenience"!

Fingerlakes eh? Hmmm, he should know where Bath is then ... where I graduated from HS.

I've never heard of an 870 "automaster". If it is an "automaster", it would be an 878, and they stopped making them in 1963, so it would have been at least 20 years old when he won it. If it -is- an 870 pump, I might be interested in giving it a good home here next to my other two 870's.

Watkins Glen, actually. And you're right - it's an 878 (pardon my error), and a semi-auto. Yeah, I Googled it and saw they were only made for a few years starting in 1959, so it DEFINITELY must have been 20 years old when he got it - guess that's why it was a raffle prize! Still looks nice, though.

Well if you cant sell em, i'd be happy to take the rifle off your hands. :)

but I'm not sure on laws in NY, but if you have a local gun show you can also try there, either to get a price estimate from several other sources, or you can definitely find someone at one who will buy it.
