I'm applying for a Rhode Island Non-Resident CCW permit and it requires that you provide a typed letter stating your reasons why you "Need" to have this permit. I guess I could simply state that I "Want" it, but I'm sure that will be the fastest way to a denial.

I really suck at these types of letters so I'm asking my fellow Highroaders for some advise on what I can "type" as reasons to Mr. Rhode Island Attorney General.

Any help in this will be greatly appreciated. Hummm, didn't need anything like this for the New Hampshire or Maine permit. :scrutiny:

Packing.Org Letters

Packing.org just reformatted and I haven't checked if they are still there but there were a series of good exemplar letters in the Mass. news page written by people from a variety of backgrounds who'd gotten their LTCs. Also, check the RI page at packing.org they usually have on the right sidebar the name of lawyers who will assit you for a fee and often the name of someone in state who will help you for free. N.B. Be advised that you have to qualify with the firearm/caliber you intend to carry, it has to be witnessed/taught by PO or NRA instructor and you have to go there to pick up the LTC when issued (the last three statements were true as of about a year ago the last time I looked).

About a year ago I started the process to get a RI non-res but I dropped the ball after being told by the friends whom I would be visiting in RI that I didn't have an ice cube's chance in the hot place of getting it.

"Want" very clearly won't do it. "Self-defense" on its own won't do it. You need to put forth something to suggest that you would be a higher than average probability target for assault. Best if you can claim that you regularly travel to RI for business and that you carry large amounts of cash (or other valuable commodities, like if you are a diamond salesman or tsomething). Basically, RI doesn't want to give a permit to just anybody, so you need to articulate some reason why you are a more important peasant than the rest of the peasants.

Drop me a PM if you can't find the Army L target you need for your qualification shoot.

Thanks for the advise everyone. I've been applying for non-resident permits for all of New England and Packing.org has been an immense help so far. I didn't think to look for form letters. I'll go back and do that. Maine and New Hampshire were very easy in what they wanted. I'm finding that Conneticutt and Rhode Island are much more difficult.

Thanks for the offer on the L targets, but I did the qualification shoot last Wednesday. Shot a 271 out of 300. I had three floater shots that really hurt me. Hummmm, not sure how that happened. :uhoh:

Hawkmoon I would try again in Rhode Island if you still interested in getting the permit. According to Packing.Org they have a new Attorney General who is actually approving requests for permits.

My only concern is what I should put on this letter.

What's your problem with CT? Compared to RI or even Maine, CT is a piece of cake. My brother lives in CT and I have CT. Connecticut is about 92.7% shall issue. Rhode Island is may issue.

I have nothing against CT. I'm just indicating the amount of paperwork you need to have completed. NH and ME were just some forms that had to be filled out. RI and CT had to have all kinds of forms notorized with some hoops to jump through. Nothing major, just more in depth then their northern brothers.

Between February and December of 2004, I spent a great deal of time preparing LTC applications. Did several dozen, with good success rate.

Spent about ten hours getting all my info together for RI application. I live seven miles from border, work part time for a FFL, threatened by clients, etc, etc.

Denied. Flat out denied.
He wanted me to document a clear & present danger to my life before he'd consider issuing a license.

It's hard. It helps a lot if you can say you are/were a cop. Prior military service also helps, but the magic word is 'cop'.

They've been sued before, and lost. Better details on CCRKBA website and forum.

Good luck. When you go for your interview, try to keep your cool. He's a prick.
