I need to load up some elk/oryx loads for the '06. I settled on 180 grain nosler accubonds. For powder, I have on hand; win 760, H414 and H4831. Has anyone used one of these powder and bullet combinations? And do you recomend a magnum priner for ball powders?

Never been a fan of ball powders for rifle loads, so I would definately go with H4831. I recommend the WLR primer which is a "hot" standard primer and will work fine with ball powders as well. I basically use 2 powders for the '06: IMR4895 for Garand platform loads, and RL22 for 1,000 yard loads for my Tactical Rifle.

You have duplicate powders in Win760 and H414, and they have a burn rate just a bit faster than the different 4350 powders available, and I would use a magnum primer with the ball powders. I use CCI primers exclusively in my pistol and rifles.

H4831 may be the best choice for the 180gr in your 30'06, and a bonded bullet is the sensible choice for reliable expansion, if they prove accurate in your rifle.

I have had excellent results with IMR 4895, IMR 4064, Varget and IMR 4350 with .30-06; I use the first three in my M1 Garands, and the last for my hunting loads with heavier bullets. My most accurate loads in my Savage 116 have come from IMR 4064 and from IMR 4895 in my Win M70 EW.

I've had good luck with 180g SGK and H4350, although the velocity wasn't great (2600ish), they shot very well.

I've also loaded a ladder with this bullet over H4831SC, but have yet to shoot them. Maybe this weekend. Good luck, and please post your results.

I'm a big fan of H4350 in the 30-06 with 165gr bullets and heavier. As for magnum primers, I've never use them in the 30-06 but if you are going to be hunting in VERY COLD conditions you might want to use them. (and I mean very cold as in prolonged sub-zero temps) I have extremely good success with a charge of between 57.0gr and 58.0gr of H4350 with that bullet in the 30-06 using a standard CCI LR primer.

Here is the link on the Nosler for their 180gr 30-06 load data. I personally feel they are very conservative in the powders they use and they don't use powders slow enough. I don't think I would use a powder as slow as 4831. Some reloaders even feel using 4350 in the 30-06 is using too slow a powder, not me of course. I'm sure you would also get good results using 4895. Why not, 4895 seems to do everything well, no?? Several reloaders I know swear by H414 in the 30-06 and I can tell you, it does make accurate ammo. If you don't want to buy another powder I would give H414/W760 a try before anything else.

In the mid to late 1950's a friend and I split up a 100 lb. keg of H-4831 which cost 50 cents a pound. We used it in everything from 243 through 300 H&H. It worked best with the heavier bullets.

I'm a die hard RL22 fan for the .270 win. and 30-06. It's slow burning and will be consistently accurate through out most of it's load range. I've also had excellent results with IMR4350 but found it was a bit more temparmental than RL22.

Posts: 10 57grains of H4350 under a 150grain hornady spire point (take or leave the boat tail version).

I've tried a few combos, that's best out of my remington 700.

I have been using 57 grains of IMR 4350 under a 150gr Nosler BT for 2 decades out of my 700 BDL. It shoots most 100 yd.d groups with the holes touching. Once I discovered that load, I never looked any further.

Went to the range today. Loaded 61 grs of RL22 with 180grn Nosler Accubond. WW cases and WW large rifle primers. No chrono, but shot half inch three shot groups from my factory M70.

Have used IMR 4350 extensively in past. Good powder, but RL22 takes the cake for accuracy.

Of the powders you have on hand, I'd go with the H4831. You won't need anything more than the WW LRP to get the fire lit. If you use a magnum primer however, watch your pressure signs. I have used a load of 60.0gr H4831SC behind 180gr Hornady bts, and Nosler partitions, using WW LRP or Federal 210 primers. for many years in a number of my 30:06 rifles, and had no overpressure signs and 1" to 1 1/2" accuracy average. some groups much tighter depending on conditions. I've also used RL 22, IMR 4350, and had good success, but If you already have H4831 use it with confidence.

Winchester LRP's are just fine. But for powder I would settle on RL22 or RL19 for optimum velcoity and accuracy. As already stated, ball powder isn't at all a suitable choice for that application, in my opinion.
Oryx are a thicker skinned animal, which would have me leaning toward a well constructed 165 gr. bullet like a Barns or a Nosler Partition. The lighter bullet will give you the increased velcoity you'll need, especially with those excellent slow burning powders, (RL22 & RL19).

Like others have said, H414 and Win760 are exact same powder. Only difference is container/label/lot#.

I've had outstanding results in the .30/06 and 180gr bullets with H4831.

You really can't get too much of it in the '06 case to go over pressure. However, you may get better accuracy at lower charge levels.

I'd start with 58.0gr and work up to whatever leaves about half the neck empty. (varies between make/lot# of brass). This will allow you to still seat the 180gr Nosler Partition without damaging or mis-shaping the bullet.

I did a work-up with a new-to-me '06 back in 2009 prior to a Wyoming elk hunt. I used IMR4350, H4831, IMR4831 and RL22.
Oddly enough, the lot# of H4831 I had gave me the best velocities of the 4. I ended up going with 55.0gr of IMR4350 because it gave the best accuracy (near 1/2moa) from my 6lb Colt Lt.Rifle. Velocity was 2,770fps. H4831 gave 2,840fps at 60.0gr from 24"bbl. This was with Federal #210match primers, and Federal brass. Winchester cases hold a little more powder with Norma brass being the highest volumn and best brass.......if you can afford it. I use range pick-ups.

I don't care for H414 due to fluxuation in lot#'s (lot of variation in accuracy/velocity). One lot I had got 2,800fps with 60.0gr under a 210gr Nosler Part's from my .338/06. Next lot# got 2,640fps with same brass, primers, and box of 50 bullets.......
