I am looking for an accurate load for the 45 ACP using Clays Universal and Rainier 200 and 230 RN plated bullets. Anyone using a combination like this?

6.7 Grs. Universal Clays with the Ranier 200 FP @ 1.235

6.6 Grs. Universal Clays with the Raniers 200 SWC @ 1.260
This is a much better load. Much better burn, cleaner and much more accurate. Ranier 200 SWC is hard to beat.

6.2 Grs. Universal Clays with Berry's 230 Gr. RN. @ 1.265
Buy the Berry's 230 Gr. RN next time. It's a better bullet.
No sign of pressure and low velocity - 711 Avg.

6.7 is max in Hodgdons data for 200 Gr.
6.0 is max for 230 Gr. Jacketed in Hodgdon's data for 230 Gr.

These loads were safe in my guns using my load procedure. Reduce 10% to start.

I use 6.5gr of Universal with 200gr XTPs and get pretty good results with a 1.245"OAL, but haven't had my best results with Universal and Raniers in my Mil-Spec 1911-A1

Make SURE you don't crimp into the bullet, if you do it will be misery. Case mouth thickness times two, plus bullet diameter, that measurement taken right at the case mouth is what you need. I would leave the case mouth open a thousandth or two before I had a thousandth of crimp into the bullet.

Winchester primers or a magnum primer help Universal clean up and shoot consistently in 45, lower charges and work up accordingly if the data is not using Winchester or a magnum primer.

I would agree that Universal is not the best for .45 and it does clean up quite a bit at pressues higher than .45 ACP pressures, but it will work and shoot pretty good. W231 is better and I also like AA # 5 for it.

Thank You for the Responses

Thank you all very much for the responses. I am still somewhat confused, whats new right?

When talking to Rainier they said to use lead load data.

I went to the hodgdons web site and looked up what they have for lead data.
They say the range for the 200 LSWC and Universal is 5.8 - 6.3. and 4.5 - 5.4 for 230 LRN.

Hopefully we are talking about the same powder, maybe I did not clearly state the powder type. It is Hodgdon Universal.

Sorry to be such a pain but I really need to understand before I load with this stuff.
