Please don't start a caliber/AR debate as I've made up my mind that the 5.45x39 ammunition prices combined with the AR ergonomics is something worth considering. I am meticulous about cleaning my weapons so I am not worried about corrosive milsurp ammo as the rifle including gas tube would be completely cleaned after use.

I appreciate that.

Okay, is $700 OTD a good price on a Smith & Wesson M&P AR15R (5.45x39mm) flat top?

I do believe there is a 5 free magazine offer from S&W on their M&P series, also.

I really appreciate fast feedback on this a ton.

*Mods, if this is posted in the wrong forum, could you please move rather than remove? I wasn't sure where to put it. Thank you.

$700 seems a standard starting price for any quality AR, and if it's the caliber you desire (I don't see many ones like this for sale), then it's a deal. If you want it, go for it.

edit: Plus 5 free magazines? Dang right it's a deal.

Depends on the model ... CDNN has had S&Ws starting at $599 for the last 6 weeks or so; I'd check their current price for the particular model you're interested in before committing to any S&W purchase.

Sounds like a deal to me. I want a 5.45 too, just not sure what platform.

Keep in mind that there is current production 5.45 (wolf, brown bear *I think*, maybe others) that is non-corrosive.

Thanks for the fast responses.

D-Day - the 5 free magazine (Pmags, I believe) is a promo through S&W that get shipped after sale, so it would be valid on any S&W M&P AR purchase.

Canuck - I knew CDNN had a M4 S&W M&P in .223 for $599 after a mail in rebate in July, but I haven't seen anything even near that since, but I might be wrong.

Carter, thanks. Is the non-corrosive ammo a lot more than milsurp?

Does anyone know if S&W got to the bottom of the alleged problems some were having with the mags shipped out with the M&P AR15R?

Sorry for the fast bombardment of questions.

If you don't care about corrosive ammo, how about a piston driven AR. Easy to clean like an AK. Or get a piston kit to avoid the corrosive materail getting back into the receiver. Just my .02.

WARNING! If you attend a carbine class with lots of other ARs present in 5.56, BE VERY VERY CAREFUL not to mix up ammo, not even one cartridge. It can lead to VERY BAD THINGS, and everybody else will blame the one guy with the "other" caliber in his AR. (You.)

This is tortuous.

Ammo prices are insane, even on milsurp comblock stuff in 5.45.

5.56? That's craziness.

I'm glad I stocked up on 7.62 when I did about 4 years ago.

This is the real precious metal.

If you don't or can't reload, I now see the appeal in .22LR for plinkers.

Canuck - That deal on the CDNN $599 was a flat top 5.56, which was still a good deal - it's $849 now.

Has the shortage and high prices on rifle ammo been like this for a while? (I haven't even looked for a while)

I just got a S&W 5.45 upper. I think I'm going to buy some ammo for it from aim surplus. That is the cheapest I have found 5.45.

Yeah ... and the OP is looking for a flat top, just a different cal.

As I said, CDNN had them starting at $599, so it's likely worth a phone call to see what the model of interest might be going for.

BTW, they've had S&W ARs among the weekly specials at least twice since the major sale being discussed.
