Hopefully this isn't too off topic.

My clothes dryer outlet died and I can't get a hold of the company I normally use.

My breaker box is located in a closet where I keep all my ammo, reloading supplies, and long guns.

When I had a new heating/cooling system put in, one of the installers asked me if I make bombs.

Does anyone know of an electrician who won't act like I'm a terrorist and is trustworthy?

How can the outlet "die"? Sure it's not just a tripped breaker? If the outlet itself is toast (hard to believe, but I guess it could happen), replace it yourself. Just shut off the breaker to it and swap it out.

There's just a few screws, and a multi-meter is cheap at Home Depot, use that to verify the power's off to it. If the wires themselves are wasted, then you'll need an electrician. Bad wires start fires.

Electrical work isn't that hard, but maybe I've just been doing it too long.

Yea what rondog said. Outlets very rarely die. If it did, it would smell like burnt toast, with some melted plasric on the side. More like a tripped or bad , loose, breaker. If you want to pay milage from Ohio, I will fix it for free! Good luck

I'm aware of how breakers work. This is an old, poorly wired house and the dryer has it's own box.

The dryer was running, it stopped. The smell of burning wires was emanating from my storage closet.

Reminds me of a guy who kept a large saltwater aquarium in his house---lots of white stuff in bags, chemicals in bottles, measuring devices, etc. all for aquarium maintainence. Some idiot worker who was in his house reported him. He was subsequently raided by the police on suspicion of running a meth lab.

Could be dryer, the outlet, the wiring or the box.

An electrician won't fix your dryer, and an appliance guy won't fix an outlet/breaker/etc... so you might want to make sure what's busted first.

"My breaker box is located in a closet where I keep all my ammo, reloading supplies, and long guns.... The smell of burning wires was emanating from my storage closet...." YIIIIKS :what: That sounds like it could of been real bad.

If you are not comfortable checking the outlet for power then buy all means get an electrician.

Being an electrician myself, home wiring is not too difficult.

You will need a multimeter(borrow one perhaps, and not a "volt pen that lights up")

Check for power at the outlet, Hot to Neutral and Hot to Ground (120 volts reading on both) for a GAS dryer, if your dryer is ELECTRIC it should be 220 Volts and you will have TWO Hots(plus a neutral and ground) and you should check voltage between them also(220 volts between the two Hots and 120 volts between EACH Hot and neutral/ground).

If these readings are correct you need to move onto the dryer itself and don't overlook a possible BAD CORD.

If you don't have these readings then there is a problem with the wiring to the outlet (Loose joint/connection or bad wire(s)) OR a faulty/bad breaker in the panel.

PLEASE for your own safety, if you are not comfortable with doing this troubleshooting, hire a electrician.

PM if you need more info.

P.S. As far as not being labeled a bomb making crazy, you are on your own, I feel like that every year when I call the exterminator and I see his face when he comes up from the basement. :neener:

If the burning smell came from the closet where the breaker panel is located, it's possible that the circuit breaker went bad, or the wire burned up where it terminates on the breaker. Another possibility is that the point where the breaker terminates on the bussing burned up, which may mean you have to replace the entire breaker panel. It definitely sounds like you need someone who knows what they're doing, and it sounds like you already know that.;) If I was anywhere near you, I'd be glad to help. Good luck!

You said the wiring in the house is rather old.

I read "The dryer circuit runs on old-fashioned cartridge fuses (paper wrapped)"

Just swing open the cover of the dryer circuit box. If it's using cartridge fuses, it'll be obvious which one's bad. (That's where the burnt smell comes from)
Just yank it and head to the hardware store for a replacement.

When you stick it in, make sure you hold it by the paper/plastic wrapping in the middle.

Presto! (highly technical electrician terminology)

Ewww! Don't fork with it then, hire a pro. If the smoke's getting out, and you're not an electrician, best bet is to hire one.

Just a radical idea here, but have you considered clearing out the closet?
If you're worried about it just move your stuff somewhere else until the repairs are done.

That's what I'd do, just move all the stuff you're concerned about out, replace when the repairs are done.

gun friendly, reloading, master electrician in dallas here.

we could get to you but it would be either later this week or early next week.

being 30-60 miles from our location you would have to pay our standard, out of county travel time.

normally 88 dollars an hour for a master, a helper, and a service truck.

being a shooter and reloader i dont see why we couldnt cut you 10% knocking it down to roughly 77 per hour, then if you qualify for our seniors discount thats another 10% putting you at around 70 an hour.

driving from the east side of dallas, diagnosing, and repair would honestly eat the better part a day.

even for a quick fix your looking at 4-5 hrs so your looking at 500 bux if we were to come and do it.

if still interested pm me, but honestly, one firearms enthusiast to another, id hate to do it cuz we would have to charge you like that just to pay our guys.

id suggest clearing out the closet and hiring a local. if you were local here you would only be looking at 120 or so.
