Sorry if this isnt the right place to have posted this, Im new here. Ive been looking to build an AR-15 because I've heard you get more rifle for your money. Now I'm not all that familiar with them apart from shooting one a couple of times. Ive read around and heard RRA make really quality rifles and parts. I was just wondering if this would be all I needed.

Wanted the AR4002 ->

And AR0114RRA->

Sorry if this is a newb question. Any opinions or advice would be very helpful and much appreciated!

Yes, that's all you need. However, I think RRA is grossly overpriced for what you get. There are better rifle kits for less money, but if you like Rock River go for it.

You can get a Colt 6920, the gold standard by which ARs are judged, for the same price as your kit.

You can piece together a BCM rifle for under 1k as well.

Spend your money wisely, IMO you're selling yourself short with an RRA upper.

For that price range, I'd suggest researching BCM among others...

I checked out BCM, along with other brands and was impressed but... For the money(as I have read) would anyone argue against Stag Arms upper and lower? I dont know much about AR15s and dont know anyone to ask, which is why Im here and need opinions. I started with RRA because a friend of a friend, etc etc. The cheaper I can get it the sooner, not to mention I dont want to upset the ol lady. I dont want the quality to suffer though. So BCM upper or Stag Arms? Again thanks for any input!

I'd rather have BCM than Stag. Palmetto State Armory is also getting great reviews. With complete uppers using FN manufactured hammer forged barrels on some model at $500 or less, they're a strong option to look at. http://palmettostatearmory.com/ar-complete-uppers.php

If you just want a complete rifle that's high quality and low cost look at the S&W M&P15 Sport. Just search M&P Sport here for more info.

I would go with Palmetto State Armory. They have superb customer service and great deals. I'm very impressed with mine. Bought the complete m4 upper and slapped it on a Stag arms lower with a PSA lpk.

EDIT: Everything you see in the picture including the added Magpul VFG and stock I have $832 in it.

I've got a complete Stag 2H upper on my carbine. The compete upper (1/9 chrome lined, bolt carrier group, charge handle, flat top upper and flip rear sight) as a package ran me 530$ from BCM's website. They have the exact same upper for sale at the same price on Midwest Industries website. I can't complain. It's more accurate than I am with the irons, has run 100%, and fits my Sabre lower very well. Total cost including shipping for the complete rifle, 4 mags, and a VTAC sling is 900. I am very pleased with it.

That kit is $675, you can be any model Colt for that? More like $1100 for the Colt.

.............Pepsi or Coke............Ford or Chevy............

You get the idea...

RRA makes fine stuff, but IMHO i think RRA is over priced. Those parts look high to me. I would look at Bravo co. for those prices. IF i wanted to build a nice AR on a budget i would look at Palmetto State Armory.

Chrome lined is needed if you plan on shooting 10,000 rounds a year with lots of full auto.

Actually the ones he was looking at comes out to $885 plus FFL and maybe shipping. Still about a hundred bucks less than you can find 6920s, I originally thought he was looking at the complete lowers.

OP... This isnt a Coke vs Pepsi debate. The top tier rifles (Colt, BCM Daniel Defense, LMT, Noveske, KAC) have specific reasons why they are better. If you decide that those options dont matter to you, then the lower grade models like Bushmaster and RRA will do you just fine. If you dont plan on shooting the rifle a whole lot then any of them will work.

But the big problem is that the lower grade rifles many times are the same price or more than a properly built model. Any time you get to 1k you are solidly in Colt, LMT, BCM and Daniel Defense territory.

Two other options you should really look into are PSA and Spikes. Both are supposed to be good rifles and dont cost a whole lot. I dont have any experience with them though so Im just going on published specs and word of mouth.

Just to add.

I have owned 4 Bushmasters in the last 10 years. All of them worked great for me. But I never put them through a very rigorous shooting schedule.

My current duty weapon is a Bushmaster. This rifle has seen a rigorous shooting schedule. My 4 day training class to carry the rifle had me shoot somewhere between 3-4 thousand rounds in that time. I also shoot the rifle a minimum of 1500 rounds a year. The rifle has never had a failure to feed, eject or fire. But the rifle has gone down 4 times for repair. During the class my trigger system broke twice and my safety broke and locked up tight.

At one qual course we were shooting LC M193 instead of the usual AE 223. Many of the Bushmasters started popping primers and having feeding and extraction/ejection issues because they actually didnt have a 5.56 chamber.

These problems didnt just happen to me. Out of the 23 Bushy rifles in my class, 22 of them had issues. My dept has decided to never buy the Bushmasters again and is actually planning on dumping them eventually when they get more Colts in.

I looked at two Stag lowers at my LGS last night and both had burs on the threads for the buffer tube. I've never seen any such flaws on the (cheaper) PSA lowers.

OP, this is sound advice, take note.

This isn't coke vs pepsi and forget about the koolaid. There are quantifiable reasons why some rifles are better than others.

I picked up a Spikes middy last year and it's been flawless though 1500 rnds so far. I understand many guys run that in one month, but that's the experience I have, albeit limited.
