I did this recently with my Sig 556. Rifle vise (regular vise and my wife's best hand towel), and the wrench you have shown... um, and a hammer... as the Sig peens their keepers.... Ruined the towel and the wrench, but I got the MFSOB off.

So tell us what stock you put on? I hate the factory stock on my 556 and have been considering a replacement.

I'm probably going to buy a replacement castle nut and then just pipe wrench it off. It's probably cheaper than buying multiple wrenches that just break.

Hi everyone!

I went to the range today, and put 2400 rounds of Federal/Lake City 5.56mm (XM193) through my rifle

I read that, and said to myself, Why did he got through all that trouble with the stock, if he's that rich, he should have just bought himself a new rifle. :neener::D

They make some thin lock rings, and if you double them up they should lock so you do not have to put so much torque on it. I put them up on ar15-kits.com in the buttstocks section, last page.

Like I said, it was a typo, but boy do I wish I could shoot up $1K worth of 5.56mm every time I went to the range!!! :D

To TX1911fan:

I used the castle nut off the bushmaster, rather than the one that came with the stock tube, as the M4 nut is thicker, however they both look like they would hold up just fine. You probably won't need to buy a castle nut, depending on what stock you buy, it may already include one.

I already have the stock, I'm just trying to remove it to put a single point sling bracket on, so I'll have to reuse it. I'm going to try the freezer trick with a heavily taped pipe wrench to see if I can get it off.

Oh I see. I was going to use a pipe wrench myself but since I had ordered already ordered new stock wrench and it was en route, I decided to wait. Let us know how it worked out for you, and what you finally ended up doing.

Try the hammer and brass punch after you freeze it. It won't tear up the castle nut. I put mine on a section of 2x6 on the floor and held it in place with the same hand that holds the punch. Depending on how the notches line up you may have it easy like I did or it may be almost impossible to do by yourself. If you have trouble holding it steady then get someone else to hold the lower in place for you.
