OK, I've completely decided on buying a 700, BUT, I don't exactly know what model I need to get. So, here's my specs and I hope you folks out there can help me slim down the possibilities. I'm not looking to build a sniper rifle but I do plan to modify it over time/ years ie: scopes, stocks, triggers, etc, so I would like it to be one of the more popular models that has the ability for accessories. Also, I would like it to be one of the lower cost variants.

I want:
30.06
Detachable Magazine
fixed sights installed but still able to accept a scope

Thanks
JTMcD.

Do you want a heavy barrel? Many of the 700's offered in heavy contours aren't available in 30-06.

Does it have to be 30-06, what about 308?

Stainless or Blued?

What do you want to spend?

There are kits available to convert the 700 to a detachable mag gun.

I think detachable magazine is where you are going to run in to probems. As far as I know Remington did not make what I would call a detachable magazine. Like Whitman says you will have to convert it over and they are not cheap. If you truly want to upgrade this rifle to a new stock and trigger different barell and so on you might be better off starting with a custom action by the time you are all done the cost will be about the same. I know from experience. I also realiz it is hard to save all of those pennies at once though. So if you must just go buy the cheapest 700 you can find that goes bang in 30-06. All you really want is the action anyway it sounds like the rest is not going to make it through the build.

I would probably not worry about the detachable magazine. I have rifles that have them and rifles that don't. In a hunting rifle, they are not all that necessary. A Savage 114 would fit the bill nicely, but that isn't a Remington and you want the 700. I would recommend the 700 BDL, which comes with iron sights, a nice stock, and a hinged floorplate.

I was looking online at the SPS DM and was wondering if I would be able to get the fixed sites on it. I have always believed that any scoped rifle still needs the site for a backup and I just can't change that.

As far as specs for me: Blue or Stainless doesn't matter. I'm wanting it for a hunting/Target rifle so I think a Heavy barrel would be nice, but would I really want to carry that through the forest for long periods of time. Probably not, I'll accept that trade off. I would like a 30.06 instead of a .308 because of the availability and options available in that cartridge compared to the .308. There is one available at my local Wal-Mart that was in the back and I haven't seen it as yet but they were asking 350.00 for it. I'd say I'd like to spend in the 3-400.00 range for it. I don't need a 1000.00+ 1/4MOA 1000yd tack driver, just something I could put a respectable group of holes in paper at 100ys(scoped) and be able to possibly put meat on the table during hunting seasons.

I would like to know what the differences were between the different models like the ADL, BDL, CDL, etc. Looking at the website, they say the SPS is built off the ADL model but from what I see on the forums, the ADL is more or less discontinued.

Thanks for the input, please keep it coming.

Well, if your set on sights, and heavy barrel isn't a priority, get a 700 BDL. It comes with rifle sights, but is drilled and tapped for a scope, it's got the hinged floorplate which can be replaced with the magazine kit, some kits are expensive, some are not. It's available in 30-06.

The only potential problem I see is when you begin to customize it, some of the aftermarket "sniper" stocks are only available for the heavy barrels. There are still plenty of options for standard contours though.

If you find and ADL beware, you won't be able to add the magazine kit. The ADL didn't have the hinged floorplate, just a blind box.

The first thing I would do after buying the gun is to adjust the trigger, it's very easy to do yourself, just google "remington trigger adjustment".

Good luck...

JohnMcD, Remington did produce Detachable Magazine versions in the early 90's and they were quite popular. They still produce them in the SPS version. As far as back up sights, I differ in my opinion based on the use of the rifle. If the rifle will be used for large Dangerous game say like in Africa, then back up sights are a must. if the rifle is going to be used for hunting at moderate to long range, then sights are not feesible and even cumbersome as you have to mount the scope higher using see through type mounts. To me, this is very uncomfortable when shooting. If you are set on back up sights then you will most likely want to look at the mountain rifle variety which I think (I may also be thinking of the ADL) still comes with sights and is drilled and tapped for scope mounts. In any case, it will not have the detachable mags. I hope this helps. If you wish to ask further questions, just PM me and we will not take up all the space here. Thanks, WILDMAN aka Danny
