I just bought a Remington Model 700 ADL in .308. I'm looking to trick it out/fix it up/ accurize whatever you want to call it. I already have a scope and am looking at bipods. What else do you recommend? As some of you may already know it doesn't have a detachable magazine. I have been told that you can convert it so that it will. Does anyone know how to do this?Lastly what ammo do you recommend, both on the basis of cost and accuracy? Thanks for the help.

Conversion to BDL-DM is not cost effective. If you just want to do it you will need the bottom metal, stock and magazine. Other than glass bedding the action and maybe having a target crown cut into the muzzle, there isn't much your 700 will need. P.S. if you decide to convert it, I have a Remington synthetic stock that I will sell.

cheapest remington ammo is best.

Yeah because so many competitions are won with cheap-0 wally world Core-Lokt or UMC ammo:rolleyes:

Cheap ammo is ...... well cheap

accurate ammo is well, accurate

the two seldom combine, youll have to find the balance based on what you want and what your rifle shoots well. Nobody else'es gun can tell you that

I'll go on record and say there is absolutely nothing wrong with WalMart or other "Big Mart" Remington Core Lokt ammunition.

It should shoot very well in your ADL. I would be very surprised if you can't get 1.5-2", 5-shot groups at 100 yds out of it. I suspect it will keep 5 rds right at 1.5". To me that's not bad accuracy out of a standard weight bolt gun.

Here is a link on how to adjust the trigger. (I would not set it at less than about 2.5 - 3 lbs)

As has already been said. Conversion to BDL or DM is not cost effective. I'd shoot it a lot as it is and see what it does.

FWIW - I would start by trying ammunition in 150 grain range. These seem to shoot the best, accuracy wise, in the .308 Win.

chevyforlife21, that is very good but it only proves that it is a match for YOUR particular rifle. It MAY only group 4'' in someone else's rifle. Since the OP doesn't hand load(if he did he wouldn't have asked about ammo) he needs to try several brands, bullet styles and weights to find the best match for HIS rifle.

I'll agree that the Remington Core Lokt *may* not be the most accurate ammo for that particular ADL.

There could be cheaper ammo that is far more accurate :neener:

Only way to tell is to shoot lots of groups with as many different brands and weights of ammo as you can.

adl to bdl conversions are done routinely, but i would reccomend against it because i think the adl is a superior hunting magazine.

float the barrel.
install pillars and glass bed the action.
work the trigger over.

do these three things yourself.

last, buy a case of whatever ammo you like (use quality ammo because you want to salvage the brass to either save for your own reloading or sell, and in either case, quality brass is better) and shoot the tar out of that rifle. for ammo reccomendations in 308, i think 165 hornady interlock custom has the best dollar:quality ratio.

I buy the Remmy Core-Lokt at wal-mart for the brass, I like Remington .308 brass. I handload 168 gr match bullets. However, the core-lokt's will do 1.5" at 100 yards, out of my Remmy 700 SPS Tac, not bad.:)

Nothing wrong with it all for plinking or even deer hunting. More serious target work, not so much. The fact is match ammo is much tighter on the tolerances from round to round. Whether you can exploit that difference depends on alot of factors, but the truth is if $10/box core lokt was the best, you'd see people using it at matches, but you don't see that.

There could be cheaper ammo that is far more accurate
There could be, but that would be an anomaly. True accuracy does not happen by accident. Tighter tolerances, better components and tighter quality control will, on the whole, result in better accuracy. Now a rifle may certainly prefer a specific bullet weight etc, but all things being equal - consistency=precision.

i get 1/2 inch groups with core lok at 100 y with my savage

Maybe if you used federal GMM you'd get 1/4inch groups....
When is the last time you got Remington Core Lokts for $10 a box? More importantly, where?
Actually it was in jest, there was some at cabelas the other day for $11.99, but I can't remember if it was core lokt honestly.

I have stopped ordering ammo as shipping charges quickly eat up any type of savings over brick and mortar stores. (No Cabelas anywhere near me) Case in point I bought a box of Winchester 117gr .257 Roberts for $27.00 after shipping they cost me $36.00. No such thing as cheap ammo anymore, just lesser degrees of costly. I agree with your basic point however consistant accuracy comes from consistant ammo and for THAT you need MATCH ammo.

Well yeah if you pay shipping and handling on ONE box it makes NO sense.

But neither does it to buy from a local outfit in the same manner, lets crunch the numbers.

257 Roberts will cost you AT LEAST $30 a box round here

now lets say for easy figureing your vehicle gets 20MPG and you drive 20 miles round trip for that ammo + $2.50

sales tax, remember filthy politicians want their cut $2.50

surely you'll buy SOMETHING else on this trip that you wouldn't have bought sitting at home, Chicken strip dinner and medium coke from sonic + $5.60

$40.60:eek: buying form the local guy. IF you make a one item trip as you cite on your mail order

I live 3 miles (exactly) from a Wal-Mart superstore. They do not carry .257 Roberts nor does the gun dealer across the road from them. The gun dealer will order them FOR me (at a mark-up of course). The ONLY brands and weight I can find is Winchester 117gr +P Super-X and Remington 117gr Core-Lokts(all other brands are SOLD OUT). I haven't fired this rifle yet so I don't know what load it will "like". So...I will only buy one box of whatever load I can find until I find THE load for my rifle at which point I will stock up.

semper fidelis (ooorah!) It would seem to me that it would be less expensive if you just traded the ADL in on a BDL-DM. Less hassle, unless it is a project in which case Brownell's should have everything you need for the conversion.
