Hello everyone. I was hoping to get some advice that pertains to my job.
I lived in NJ all my life. I have an FID here and several handguns and a carry permit. I work as an armed security guard, and for the current handgun we have the company issued them but it went under my purchase permit.
I recently moved to PA.
Now, the company is in the process of switching handguns to something better, and I'm imagining this would be the same process as the first gun.'
My questions is basically what will I need to do to get this gun since I'm not a NJ resident anymore but work armed in NJ still.
1. Is there such a thing as a non-resident pistol purchase permit?
or
2. Can I buy the gun in PA myself in the same make and model the company will use and then somehow register it in NJ?
ALSO
How will I get this new gun registered on my NJ carry permit living out of state after I qualify with it?
Thank you for the time and help!

I would suggest you ask:

1) The company you work for
or
2) the NJ State Police

You really want to bet your job/freedom on what "somebody on the internet told me"?

May I second this motion below.
I celebrate my dparture from New Jersey on November 2 each year since 1972
"Free at last thank God Almighty Free at last." I wish you well in your job.
If I recall i got my purchacers permit from the local police dept. not State boys.
Check where you got ypur permit from also.

I don't know the answer either, but you did the right thing. PA has some of the best gun laws in the northeast/mid-atlantic.

Oh, boy...you've got a lot of questions in there.

I am not a lawyer, but I was an informed layman and former armed NJ resident.

First: Be aware that in PA, people armed for professional purposes such as guards are subject to a set of regulation that is separate and distinct from the normal citizen's LTCF. I am not familiar with that body of knowledge, but you must know that it exists and look into the matter.

Second: Did you change your FID to your PA address as a nonresident with the NJ State Police? If not, your FID is no longer valid...not that it really matters. It's now a pointless piece of paper.

Third: I was not aware that NJ carry permits were specific to a particular handgun.

Fourth: as a citizen of the state of PA, your right to bear arms in defense of yourself and your state shall not be questioned. Accordingly, you can buy any gun you want, in the 15 minutes it takes to fill out a 4473 and pass NICS.

Fifth: Your company, and its lawyer, should sort out your duty armaments and work related NJ carry permit.

Sixth: You should also obtain your PA LTCF, so as to avoid any issue around carrying your gun in PA to & from work when not on duty. If you should be armed on duty in PA, see point the First.

Seventh: Although NJ has a pistol registry, it is not necessary for people to register their guns when they move into NJ from out of state. Entries to this registry are automatically made via pistol purchase permits. I do not know the relationship between this, and the NJ carry permit. That being said, you can register a pistol, but unless it's necessary for your NJ CP, there's no advantage or necessity in doing so.

Eighth: According to GCA '68, it is no longer possible for you to directly purchase a pistol in NJ. It would need to be shipped to an FFL in PA...which is pretty pointless.

Ninth: I would hesitate to carry a personal gun on professional duty, except as an emergency backup, lest it create some liability exposure for me.

Are you working as an armored car guard?

Armored Car Guards in NJ, although using the same paperwork and permit process, are dealt with separately by the NJSP. There were people at my old company who lived out of state in PA and NY and worked in NJ armed.

It is possible to register a gun and obtain an NJ CCW as an out of state resident. As for the details, I am not sure, and would strongly suggest you ask both your company and the NJSP.

Not NJ any more

If you are not living in New Jersey or working in New Jersey then New Jersey law does not apply to you. You follow Pennsylvania law.
You state that you moved to PA. Is your job in PA or are you still working in New Jersey? If you are working in New Jersey you might have some problems with your FID.

Thanks for all the input so far. I'm still working in NJ, and it's not an armored car company, it's a federal job where the security is contracted out, it's like working for the TSA almost but armed. And in NJ each gun you carry in NJ whether you're a civilian or retired law enforcement has to be qualified with and registered on your carry permit. It's a phenominal money making scheme to have you pay 90 bucks each time you want to qualify with a new gun, twice a year.
