I am contemplating acquisition of a Remington M700 rifle chambered for the 7 MM Remington Magnum cartridge. The rifle has a black matte finished barrel and a black synthetic stock. The gun's serial number is E63878xx. Need help identifying the year of manufacture, specific sub category of M700 series as well as some feel for the value of the rifle. The condition of the rifle is reported as being in good mechanical condition with some noticeable scratches on the stock.

Thanks, Bud The Traveler

+1 on the Remington society web site for barrel dates. The rifle in question sounds like the SPS model which replaced the ADL as the lower priced model. The action and barrel are the same on all 700 models, only difference is the way they are polished and finished. The stock is the worst feature of this model. It has the unfortunate nickname of Tupperware stock. Indestructible but very limber.
I am always on the lookout for less expensive 700's for custom builds, I would put the one you described in the $350 to $450 range, depending on whether it has a blind magazine or hinged floorplate.
