need help interpreting choke markings...

dern it i USED to know this!!!

Wife adn i just brought home her 28ga O/U. the gun comes with screw in chokes and 5 tubes total.

ok here's the thing, the chokes are marked with the, i'm guessing standard, "dot notation" form of indeification for the various constrictions. and while i USED to know how to read that, (learned it so i could know what the choke on teh barrels of my heirloom Lefever 16ga) i have forgotten how.. :banghead:

so which is it??

fewer dots = more open

or MORE dots = more open????

need to know before sunday so that we can get teh gun set up for skeet before we head out.

One dot is cylinder, 5 dots is full in most choke systems. You didn't say what make the gun is so I can't tell you 100% for sure.

Beretta, Benelli and Browning (Invector+) choke tubes are all marked:

1 - Full
2 - Improved Modified
3 - Modified
4 - Improved Cylinder
5 - Cylinder (or Skeet)

the gun is a Khan

and the chokes themselves are not compatible with any other system. the Bennelli tubes are most similar but have a different thread pitch.

so are you guys saying that it can be ether way???

well i hate when things go complicated!

btw for some reason the instruction manual doesn't seem to tell what the marks mean either.

If you hold the 1-dot tube up next to the 5-dot tube, your naked eye (can I say that here?) should be able to tell which one is full choke by the thickness of the tube wall. ie thicker wall = less ID

Time to use an organic feeler gauge to determine relative constrictions.

To wit...

Make sure the weapon is empty. Grab either the tube with the most marks, or none. Stick an appropriately sized finger in it. Note how far it goes in. Remove and grab another tube, again with either or none. Stick in that same finger and note where it stops.

The one where the finger goes in the least is full choke. The one that goes in the furthest is something like Cylinder, Skeet or IC.

Once you've figured out if the most dots means tight or untight, the system should be crystal clear for relative degrees of choke.

me and my dumb brain.......

right before i came in here to check my mail before bed i executed BOTH of the above mentioned "empirical testing methods",

ie well THIS one has most dots this has least, more looks more open, let's see how it reacts to the "stick my fat finger in there" test.

both sight and "depth O' finger" seem to indicate that the 5 dot choke is the most open one. so as of right now the gun has the "4" and "5" chokles in place so as to get the most open set of patterns that we can, which i gather is the proper way to go for skeet.

have to get Delfine to log in and tell you all about her first time out with HER shotgun tommorow.

might even have her give a mild update on the original thread on teh subject, before we head to bed tonight....

Glad you got it figgered out. I have trouble remembering myself.
I am really concerned about the direction this forum is going. I thought I was pushing the limit with "naked" but then Dave (a Moderator no less) comes in with "organic feeler guage"! .
