my 1858 hits about a foot high and left at 60yds and im trying to figure out how to adjust the "fixed sights" to the right, i dont mind the foot high its just id like to be more centered on the target. any suggestions:confused:

You need to move the front sight to the right to make the revolver shoot left.

The best way to correct the situation is to have a dovetail cut in the barrel, and then install a new, higher front sight. You can move the sight in the dovetail to correct windage error, and file the blade down to make the revolver shoot higher. It shoot shoot low when you first install the sight.

Old Fuff is correct the best thing to do is a dove-tail front sight.

Other options would be to open the rear sight on the side you want the gun to shoot to,
File the opposit side of the front sight,
Or turn the barrel with a wrech

But easiest and best way is a dove-tail front sight.

Here is what the late Tom Ball told me back in 1999 when I asked for sighting help on a Pietta remington that I wanted to bring to POA @ 30 ft.:

": Hi, unscrew your barrel a little bit, if you put a scribe mark on the barrel and frame, unscrew it about the width of the scribe. Which should move you about an inch and a half, then you may need to unscrew it a bit more! Until you get it where you want it. Remove the loading lever assembly, and cyl pin and put a witness mark between the barrel and frame whereit enters. Put the barrel in a vice, with thin [cereal box thickness] on each side of the barrel and tighten up! Then use a big adjustable wrench, with cardboard between the jaws, and clamp firmly on the flats of the frame just behind the barrel, and unscrew it a little bit which will move the front sight to the right and cause the shots to go farther left! that is unless the gun is a Uberti, then the barrel is locktited in and cannot be moved. "

Since then I have read that you can heat the frame of the Uberti and soften the epoxy but who needs to when the Uberti front sight can be tapped over in its dovetail.

I'd just get a Uberti front sight either from VIT Gunparts or Taylors Firearms & have your barrel dovetailed to accept it, it's actually prety easy to do & once done you can drift adjust it to accomodate the right & left errors & just file the top to bring the POI to your desired POA.

thanks, ill call around and see what it'd cost me to get a dovetail cut, i would try and turn the bbl maybe, but i like the idea of a taller front sight to adjust my zero also;)

Before you do that, get a sight first, or put another way, get a bid, but don't have the dovetail cut until you get the sight. When it comes to sights I have found all kinds of possibilities from these two sources.

Incidentally, during the 19th century when the original guns were made, it was not unusual for a revolver owner to have a dovetailed front sight installed in their favorite six-shooter so they could adjust the point of impact to the point of aim.

Just about every Colt I have seen on the tables at gun shows have had a dovetailed front sight which tells me that it was common for them to shoot off to one side. I have certainly found that to be true of the repros. On average the Remingtons are much more "on" windage wise. If they shoot low it is an easy trick to file a little off the front to dial them in. I have twisted a couple of Piettas and it wasn't that difficult but you have to be real calculating to be sure you don't turn them the wrong way. It might even pay to take a vise mounted to a board so you can clamp the board onto the shooting bench or nearby to do the adjustments. Otherwise, for me, it could make a few trips to the range to get one dialed in.

:what:Why would you want to shoot a 1858 Remington @ 60 yards? Velocity would be next to nothing at that range.

N-SSA pistol match is 25 and 50 yards with those old cap and ball pistols, and the do quite well at that range!

Tne Remington New Army .44 is accurate and lethal - up to and beyond 100 yards. Fomal target matches are often conducted at 50 yards, and groups can rival those shot with modern cartridge revolvers of similar caliber.

A .457 round ball weighing 148 grains and backed by 30 grains of black powder will leave the muzzle of an 8" barrel at around 900 FPS. At 60 yards it is not "next to nothing."

nothing is better than takeing the pistol to a gunsmith to have the dovetail front sight installed ...I took one of mine and told the gunsmith the problem with it shooting to the left ...,.he not only installed the dovetail front sight for me but he also tightened the barrel so the sight was top dead center ..
60.00 well spent .
