Before this goes downhill, I have been watching gunbroker and gunsamerica- but I haven't seen these selling- I have just seen them listed.

My brother wants to sell his stainless ruger m77 hawkeye in 3006 to help with some baby expenses.

It has a leupold 3-9 mounted on it- though I am not sure what model. The gun and scope are probably about 10-15 years old. Hasn't been shot much and is mechanically and aesthetically in excellent condition. Has the old style Ruger synthetic stock on it and the scope is in the ruger rings.

I see the guns regularly list for 600ish, but no one bites. Without more scope information, I'm hesitant to venture a guess-though I am almost certain it is a vari-x II.

I've been playing far more with ARs and handguns lately and really have no idea what to tell him.

What do you think is a fair price to list it at? Is this even enough information to hazard a guess? Like I said, I am extremely removed from the bolt gun market- so I don't know what is and isn't reasonable or if these are even still popular.

Any help is appreciated.

Mike

It can't be too old, the Hawkeyes just came out a couple years ago. They early ones with the dull finish are less desirable than the ones made in the last year or so. The rifle would probably be easier to sell without the scope, and you never get your movey back out of optics anyway. I would price the rifle somewhere less than $500, $600 with the scope.

By old style do you mean the skeleton synthetic stock. If so the gun is quite old. The Hawkeye came out in 2006. The guns with the skeleton style stocks have a bit of a cult following. If you can find the right person then you may get a little more for the rifle. But most guys would rather have the newer style stock, so selling it may take a little longer.

A 15 year old Leupold helps some, but not much. Within the last 5 years or so Leupold improved the quality of their scopes across the lineup.

Gun markets vary in different parts of the country. Around here I'd say $300-$400 for the rifle. Add $100-$200 for the scope depending on the model. Hunting rifles are harder to sell at this time of year as well. From an individual I'd expect to have to sell on the low end if you want to sell quickly.

I just bought an M77. Mine was new and I did not pay retail because I am family to the shop owner, but there was a used compact in 6.8 there with a cheaper scope than what you are talking about going for $650.00. Stainless is a little higher. I would not take anything less than 650 or 7 for it. Hope that helps. BTW, just because they aren't selling on guns america doesn't mean they aren't selling. Go to a gun shop right now and try to order one. When I bought my M77 243 on 11/1/11 I was told "it was the last one in the country." Prolly a slight exageration, but point is they are purty darn popular right now and hard to find. With deer season underway in the next couple of weeks and the Hawkeyes hard to fnd, I would think you shouldn't have any problem getting it sold.

What you have is a Ruger M77 MKII All-Weather Zytel Stock, sometimes referred to as the skeleton stock or the canoe paddle stock

I love those Ruger zytel stocks...have 2 of them, 270, 243, and sold the 7mm Mag
I am on the hunt now for a zytel 10/22 stock

My online Blue Book of Gun values subscription
says $425 for the rifle in 98 per cent condition.

That is retail, and may vary regionally.
