The Mrs. has decided she wants to hunt this year. She shoots my 308 Win with proficiency but it is heavy and the LOP is a bit long for her. I bought an action and barrel for her very own rifle but it won't be done in time for this season. As luck would have it, a lightly used 270 Win Ruger M77 Hawkeye surfaced on gunbroker and for $450 it made it's way to my home. There's a minor ding on the fore-end of the stock but other than that, this is the cleanest used rifle I have ever seen. While the wood isn't Select grade it's still aesthetically pleasing. I gotta say, I'm kinda jealous. I took it out for a hasty "test drive" after mounting a scope and the factory Fusion ammo did not disappoint, 3 holes under 3/4" at 100yards and a bit outside of 3" at 270 yards. The moment I laid eyes on this thing I was asking myself what have I been doing with my life, a fine rifle indeed. But most importantly, she likes it and shoots it well. So I guess my question to you is how does a guy go about convincing a gal to give up a gun. Any tips on "losing it in a tragic boating accident"?

Why would you like to loose a fine rifle in a boating accident? Your golden. A wife that found a rifle she likes. A wife that likes hunting. She is a pal for life. Life is short. Enjoy it when you can. Ruger M77's are the cat's meow.

You now go buy your own.....just maybe not the .300 like i had.
Accurate as all get out, but brutal in a sub 9.5lb package.

I really like the Hawkeyes, and ill probably get another one in the future.

i dont think you'll be getting it back lol. i have the same rifle in 30-06 and absolutely love it. i know i would never part with mine!

Accuracy on some of the older versions of the Ruger 77 could be spotty. Some good, others not so much. But the Hawkeye's usually shoot very well.

Great pic of your wife with her new rifle. They are both gorgeous! :)

FWIW ...
Ruger M77 .243 is one of the firearms that I have regretted letting get away. I bought it NIB in ~1976 and traded it a few years later for something that I cannot now even recall. It was an excellent shooting & handling little rifle.

Cdnn sales still has some close out models listed for very good prices.

The Hawkeye is my favorite bolt action. I have 3 of them and am contemplating a 4th.

Congrat's on finding an accurate 77 Hawkeye. I wish I could say the same as I do love those actions.

An even bigger congrat's on the hunting buddy you have there. Years ago, I was glad my wife didn't hunt with me because I thought she would be a pain to take along. 27 years later I spend a lot of time in the stand wishing she was there.

Haha.
I know what you mean.

I traded for my wife a Ruger M77 tang safety model in .243 and I like it more than she does. We've both killed deer with it, but I carry it in the woods more than she does.
I do take the pink camo sling off before I take it though. ;)

I spent a lot of time looking at the gun racks locally and the big sporting goods stores when we went out of town. Seems like nobody can properly inlet a barrel channel anymore. Even the Tika T3s I handled had a big gap one one side and touched the barrel on the other side. There's a Kimber 84M Classic in 243 I'd have really liked to get her, but the $1400 price tag was a bit much.

MSRP on these is $975 with actual price ranging from $700-$850, and for what you get I'd say that's a pretty good buy. The bluing isn't a deep luster and the checking isn't as sharp as say a Browning Golden Medalion or the Kimber Classic but still more refined than most of what you can find in the same price range. Much nicer than my Savage 11 Light Weight Hunter in all regards, glad I sold that miserable thing.

Great pic of your wife with her new rifle. They are both gorgeous! :)

Thanks, I'll pass the compliments along.

Nice find, Orcon!

What strap is that you have on the rifle?

It's a Boonie Packer Safari sling, been using them since I was a kid and I'd never go on a hunt without one.

Looks like you made a good buy.
Here's my 77 Hawkeye in 280 Rem. I bought it a couple of years ago from CDNN for $500 plus $12 shipping and $10 FFL fee. I just put the Leupold 3-9 X40 scope on it. I've only bore sighted it with actual sighting in to come when the rain lets up.
I had a choice between the .280 or an 06 for the same money but I've had so many 06s in my life I was just tired of them. The .280 is a great round and my friend reloads so I have 180 rounds on hand.... enough to last the rest of my life. I too am a walnut and steel man.

Trust me, give up on that gun. Find an M77 for you. She looks WAY too happy with it in that pic.

I hooked my wife up with a Ruger American in 7mm-08 and bought her a pretty Boyd's stock for it. She loves it and shoots it impressively. Asked her if I could take it opening day last year and got a prompt "No take one of yours!" I had to laugh!

I love Rugers and the M77s, got several calibers and just got an older model one in .257 Roberts and it will be my main go to gun this coming season, even for hogs just cause I always wanted one. It shoots the Remington core lokts with the round nosed bullets, others like the SSTs, pointed bullets are all all over the place...still it will come out of the safe on a regular basis and I hunt every day, cow pastures full of hogs and coyotes....so little time....

Man, she happy. I'd go with that. JMHO. Best get you one for yourself.

But yeah, hard to fault a M77, with a cold hammer forged barrel. Do you know that was the rifle
Jed Eckhardt (played by Patrick Swayze) carried in the movie Red Dawn ?

You have a "Green Light" now to buy another rifle. You aren't complaining I hope.

I recently bought a CZ75 pistol that I've always been wanting. After bringing it home my wife took a shine to it. Wanted to go shoot it. Afterward she laid claim to it. I'm a little sad, but now I'm on the hunt for a 9mm carbine and..... IT'S ALL HER FAULT! ....hahahahahah!

Nice find. Ruger 77's are good guns; I had one I picked up for a Moose hunt, sold it afterwards, as I thought it was more than I needed for deer, (I had a .30-06 then, too, and did think of keeping it for a long range gun....) The Boonie Packers are nice; I usually just use paracord to make 'em up, like I did when I was in....maybe someday I'll pony up and buy one.

I would gladly give up such a gun if SWMBO took a shining to it and would actually use it.

Congrats. Pretty Rifle, beautiful wife. I can relate. We’re fortunate indeed.
