Mr. Brownlow:
If your previous e-mails were sent to me, I apologize for not responding. I
try to respond to all e-mails from Ledger Online readers or forward them to
the proper Ledger employees.
As the online editor, my main concern in your letter is about articles that
appear without bylines. We try to make sure that all news articles and
columns reflect who wrote them. The main exception to this is daily Ledger
editorials, which are published unsigned in the newspaper as a reflection
of the opinion of the Ledger editorial board.
The specific article you mention, "Self Defense Bill Goes Too Far," was an
editorial published Saturday. Since it is an editorial, it's one of the few
articles that's not supposed to have a byline.
If you clicked on it from our editorial page or from the list of editorials
on Saturday's home page, the heading at the top of the page would have
indicated it's an editorial. Unfortunately, because of the limitations of
our content management, if you clicked on the editorial from anywhere else
(a search of the site, for example) the top of the page will say "Local and
State," making it look like a news article. I'd like to set it up so that
there is no confusing editorials and news articles, but so far I haven't
found a solution.
I am unable to speak for the editorial page editors about editorial policy
or what columns they've run and haven't run. I would be surprised, however,
if they've never run a pro-gun column on the editorial or op-ed page, since
these pages usually reflect views from writers of all political stripes.
I am forwarding your e-mail and my response to our editorial page editor so
that he will be aware of your concerns.

If nothing else prompted him to reply, ya gotta believe that the thought of hundreds of e-mails pouring in would
Of course his response still avoids the "POLICY" question but he's just an editor, not the Head Honcho.
