I am in the market for a .223 Rem bolt action rifle. I know that this forum is a great resource and was hoping to get some guidance on where I could look, to get info and suggestions on what to buy. Does anyone have any ideas of where I should be looking?

Currently, I am looking at the CZ 527 Varmit, the Weatherby Vanguard, and the Remington 700.

Thanks guys

remington 700.
now, as for which specific remington 700, it depends on your expected application. for a heavy barrel gun, at a mid-range price, 700 vls. for a lighter gun for low price, find a 700 adl - there's still a few around. for sporter weight, but a fluted heavier barrel and higher price, 700 lvsf.

guess that about covers it.

don't cheap out on your optics and mounts.

Savage 10FP series

In the market myself-------------looking at the Savage 10FP-LE2A;
add a Bushnell 4200 Elite 6x24-40 and I'll be good to go----waiting till the budget lets me get it all at once............................

I've got the CZ

set up with a Weaver K-4 as a calling gun and I really like it. Excellent quality, great value. Also have a HB Savage that is a phenominal shooter since I replaced the stock trigger. Had a 700 that went down the road. Enjoy whatever you purchase.........Essex

I will be using this for varmit hunting, probably in the 100-200yd range most of the time. Elimination of coyote will be one of the primary uses. Accuracy out of the box is one main concern I have. I probably will go with a matte finish rifle and possibly synthetic stocks for low glare and visibility. Beautiful wood is of no concern for me at all in this application. Any more thoughts with this additional piece of info? The Remington SPS is another I have looked at on the net.

Take a look at Tikkas, too. Any of the rifles mentioned will do fine for your stated purpose. If you want to shoot dimes @ 100 yds., get one of the heavy-barrel, freefloated varmint models.

for a calling gun, a sporter weight is all you want. anything heavier is a liability. 700 adl gets my vote for this role. 700 sps as a second choice.

put a leupold vx-2 4-12 on top held in place by talley lightweights (ring is integrated into the base, so it is solid, and you don't have to shop for bases - easily worth the $43 they cost), a harris model 25 bipod, and you have as good of a calling rig as can be had.

How would the Remington 700 and the CZ 527 Varmit compare as far as accuracy out of the box?

I bought a Remington 700 BDL about 6 weeks ago and couldn't be happier with it. After a 15 minute trigger adjustment and required safety checks I put a Leupold 3-9X40 scope on it and took it to the range. When I did my part it would put 3 rounds of Remington Express Corelokt 55 gr. factory ammo into a bit less than 1". The last time I took it out about a week ago, it did the same thing. I'm pretty well pleased with the Remingtons....fit and finish is excellent and the action is smooth. It's my 3nd BDL and I'm very pleased with them. Good luck on your choice.

What is the twist rate on the Remington? Will it shoot the heavy stuff, or are you limited to light weight ammo? I have thought about the Savage as well- I think it's 1:9, and that'll put it in the iffy at best catagory for 75 and up grain ammo :(

Another vote for the Savage 10FP with the Accutrigger, they're great guns. The factory stock got replaced with a B&C, but even with that added cost, they're still cheaper than a Remington or Winchester, and shoot just as well (or better).

I've heard that the Savage is a great gun. I don't know what they would cost with an aftermarket stock to improve them, but you can get a Remington 700 BDL at Walmart or Academy for $525-$549 around here. The CDL's are about $45 more if you prefer the matte finish on the blueing.

Once I decide on my rifle, what scopes would you suggest for my particular application? I'm currently considering the Bushnell Trophy 4-12X40 AO for coyote hunting and other varmit in the 100-200yd range. Would something else be a better choice???

Could be wrong, but I believe that the twist rate of .223 Remington "P" models is 1-in-9. It's 1-in-12 on my VS.

TC66,

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your CZ and what did you have to pay for it? I am in SW OH too and I have a CZ 452 Special .22 cal and I love its accuracy. I would definitely consider CZ again for this .223 Rem purchase.
Thanks

Another vote for the Savage

I know its not in your list, but you should really consider the Savage line of rifles. My Pappy-in-law has one and it is a freakin tack driver. So much so that I bought one in .308 and my bro-in-law got one in .300 WSM. All three will shoot ragged holes at 100meters if we do our part.

If you just gotta have one in your list (and not a Savage) I have heard a lot of very good things about the CZ.

Of course, 2 gazzilion Rem 700 actions can't be wrong.

P.S. He has a frugal (read cheap) Tasco 6 X24 x 44 and it shoots well, but I never buy anything new unless its a Bushnell Elite 4200...

Just my $0.02

Yeah, if I were you, I'd throw into the mix the Savages with accu-trigger - the 12VSS-LP and BVSS, or for a little less, the 10FP, as well as the NEF Handi-Rifle UltraVarmint single shot in .223, if you're willing to extend past turnbolts, and like a real budget choice.

The CZ 527 Varmint Kevlar or Varmint Laminated is a real nice choice as well - it has won a lot of awards for accuracy in Europe, in my understanding.

Are those Weatherby Vanguard models any good? I've been surprised to see them listed in the mid $300's in the .223 Rem caliber.

You're right!

The CZ 527 varmint synthetic with the kevlar stock is also a 1:9 twist, as are some of the 527 varmint laminated, but they can't tell you which ones. It's just the luck of the draw on that laminated stock version.

The 1:9 twist lets you load heavier bullets(or shoot factory match with heavier projectiles) to reach out further.

I wonder how long it's goint to take the factories making bolt guns to put barrels with even faster twists in them for .223, especially now that Sierra has that 90 gr HPBT. It requires a 1:6.5 twist to stabilize.

They're good rifles, especially for the money. They have a 1-12 twist, tho, so you're largely limited to 62gr bullets and under.

Another vote for the CZ527. heck of a deal. got mine new, with a scope (ok, it's a cheapie $100 scope, but i'm a cheap guy, so it worked out  ) for about $650 out the door. Put a harris bipod on it, and with that set trigger (which totally rules BTW), I can build little bitty groups with nasty surplus ammo at 200 yards. And i'm not a good shooter, so it's got to be the gun. :p

I think the CZ's are the best value in rifles.
