Need help with .223 Rem decision.

What does the expression "set trigger" mean anyway? I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to centerfire rifles.

On the CZ, it has a regular trigger pull (back) probably 5 to 7 lbs, nothing special. But, you get it cocked, get ready, and then you push the trigger forward, and it locks.
and then, the trigger is at like 1 to 2 lbs.
just brush it, feels like glass breaking, it surprises you :what: and you get a real nice shot. A very nice feature of the CZ. I don't know if others have it.

You've certainly been given a lot of good advice here. I'd guess I'd keep all three you've mentioned in mind and spend a lot time "petting" them if you can. The fit of a rifle is very important for shooting it well and while I'm about as medium built as you can get, I have found that some rifles fit me far better than others do. I've held rifles that felt like a 2X4 to me while others seemd to be custom made to fit me. Price, and anticipated accuracy being more or less the same, look to what "feels" good to you.

Other than that, I have high praise for the Savage. I've got Remington's that are only mediocore, and I've never shot a Tika.

Good luck, picking out a new gun is one of those painful pleasures in life!

I was at a local Dick's Sporting Goods store tonight and saw a Savage 12FVXP in .223. It was synthetic stock varmit rifle with the heavy barrel and it came with a Simmons 4-12X40 AO scope on it for $479. I'm thinking VERY seriously about picking that up. It seems like a good value and it feels great. What do you guys think about that option???

Cueball- I picked up that exact same rifle, the 12fvxp in .223. Mine went for $449. It is my favorite rifle and I own two other savages. But the real kicker for me was it was an easier sell for my checkbook (ie convincing the wife) because I was up and running for a mere 5 bills. Little did the checkbook know that within a couple months I was going to spring for the SSS trigger and a B&C stock and then a year later I swapped in a Vari-X III scope. So now I have over a grand into the rifle but it is indeed my favorite.

There's a lesson in there somewhere but I don't know what it is....

ps. I've got a five group target from that rifle that averages .401" at 100yds

egzet: If you can find an AR anywhere near the price of the bolt rifles mentioned in this thread that is capable of shooting in the 2's and 3's, how about posting a link, as I'd sure as heck like to buy one??

I'd get the 700 with a Leupold scope. You can get into the older ones at a decent price. I don't get the cheap optics route. You need to see your target.

Well, after a lot of thought and weighing options, I went ahead and took the plunge. I picked up that Savage 12FVXP. I should be able to give an initial report on how it shoots Friday evening as I plan on spending Friday afternoon at the range trying it out. I hope I made the right decision. Time will tell.

The results are in!!!

As I mentioned earlier, I just got a Savage 12FVXP the other day. Well, today I got out and shot it for the first time and boy am I thrilled with my purchase! :D
I had 1/2" groups @ 100yds after 5 shots of sighting in the scope. It's a great value and a great shooting rifle. I would highly recommend it to anyone. :)

Cueball, if the 4-12x40 Simmons does not work for your intended purpose, might I suggest the Bushnell Banner 6-18x50 (Dusk til Dawn). Should prove to be very useful for coyote hunting. Just wondering, does your rifle have the 26" heavy barrel? I have a 12FV which does have the heavy barrel and it shoots like a dream with 62 gr. IMI AP ammo. Also, being that I wanted a "tack driver", I have my trigger set so that a very slight touch sends a round down range and will promise you that it is lighter than any of the afore mentioned trigger pulls of the higher end rifles. P.S. Don't slam the bolt!

Out of what you are considering I'd go with the CZ.

When I buy my next bolt rifle it will be either a CZ or a Howa (though I'm probably not going with .223, it will probably be .243 or 6.55 Swiss).

Magnuumpwr,
Yes mine does have the heavy "varmit" barrel. It shoots great and I am thrilled with my purchase!
:D

The Sako 75 varmint would be an exelent choice. I have one topped with a bausch and lomb 4200 elite 6-24x40AO adn can put 10 shots into 5/16" at 100 yards.

Sako 75: That's some powerfully-good shooting! When you say "10 shots INTO 5/16"..." how are you measuring the group size?

With gun, scope, case, and Harris bipod that I just got, plus a box of ammo... I've still got less than $600 in mine.
:D
